fter managing to clear protesters from around the Legislative Building in Hong Kong on Wednesday afternoon through the use of tear gas and rubber bullets, groups of riot police posed together for photos that they’ll be able to show their grandchildren one day.
A number of photos are currently floating around social media showing HK cops taking some “souvenir selfies” with an empty Harcourt Road in the background. One image shows police posing for a shot while taking a break in the parliament building prior to clashing with protesters. In the pics, some officers smile and make a thumbs up while others put on their most serious faces.
Police chief Stephen Lo defended the use of rubber bullets against protesters, declaring that his officers had “no choice” when faced with protesters armed with sharpened iron bars and bricks. He classified the clashes as a “riot situation,” a designation that was later echoed by Chief Executive Carrie Lam.
At least 72 people were injured in these skirmishes, including several that were hit in the face by rubber bullets.
