housands of students at a school in the Indian city of Chennai have welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to their country enthusiastically, if a bit strangely.
On Thursday, the 2,000 students assembled outside their school in the shape of Xi’s name in Chinese characters while also donning masks displaying the face of the Chinese leader. “Hearty Welcome, Xi Jinping,” reads the full message.
Xi arrived in India on Friday for two days of events and informal talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu. The trip is a follow-up to Modi visiting Xi last year in Wuhan.
The two world leaders will have much to discuss. At the top of the list will likely be the issue of Kashmir.
At a meeting earlier this week with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, Xi declared that China would support Pakistan on issues related to its “core interests.” A joint statement from the two leaders said that Jammu and Kashmir ought to be “properly and peacefully resolved based on the UN Charter, relevant UN Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreements.”
Following the statement, India warned China to stay out of its “internal affairs.”
