hile it’s been reported that Beijing is looking to replace Carrie Lam, things certainly aren’t looking that way following a meeting between the Hong Kong leader and Xi Jinping.
The two met on Monday in Shanghai ahead of the opening of the second China International Import Expo. According to Chinese state media reports, Xi expressed the central government’s “high degree of trust” in Lam and said that she has “done a lot of hard work.”
A photo from the meeting shows both smiling and shaking hands. Sending what appears to be a very strong signal about her job security.
The meeting follows a Financial Times report from last month that said Beijing was looking to replace the extremely beleaguered and unpopular Lam with an “interim” leader by March 2020.
China’s Foreign Ministry promptly dismissed the report, calling it a political rumor from those with “ulterior motives.” Throughout these months of protests and crisis in Hong Kong, the Chinese government has repeatedly voiced its support for Lam, even if she doesn’t appear to want it.
In September, audio leaked of her saying in a private meeting that she would quit if only she had the choice.
