hinese President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron have been seeing a lot of each other recently, taking their relationship to the next level over some glasses of wine.
Both leaders are in Shanghai for the China International Import Expo where they stopped by one booth on Tuesday offering wine. The two clinked their glasses together and took some sips. Xi nodded but didn’t seem overly impressed.
That evening the two then spent some more time together, taking their wives out to see Shanghai’s Yuyuan Gardens.
Though it wasn’t all fine wine and sightseeing. China and France signed $15 billion in trade deals during Macron’s visit, including contracts that will see French companies export beef, chicken, and pork to China.
Macron also says that he brought up France’s and Europe’s concerns with how the protests in Hong Kong are being handled. This was his second trip to China as French president. Last time around, he gifted Xi a horse and learned how to say “make our planet great again” in Mandarin.
