former NBA player has been fined after hurting Chinese feelings by not showing proper respect for China’s national anthem and flag.
Formerly a member of the Boston Celtics, France-born Guerschon Yabusele now plays for the Nanjing Monkey Kings of the Chinese Basketball Association.
As China’s national anthem played ahead of a game on Friday, all of Yabusele’s teammates stared solemnly at China’s national flag while Yabusele himself looked down with his eyes closed.
The image was captured on the broadcast of the game and soon found its way to Chinese social media where some netizens voiced their anger at the “disrespect” Yabusele had shown China.
Other, more reasonable net users pointed out that in many countries bowing your head in quiet contemplation is a perfectly appropriate thing to do when a national anthem is played and is the preferred stance of most NBA players.
Presumably though, foreign players in China are instructed to keep their heads up during the anthem. Yabusele previously played a season for the Shanghai Sharks in 2016-17.
For his transgression, Yabusele has been fined 10,000 yuan ($1,400) by the league.
