The sale of all live poultry at markets across the province has been banned by the provincial market supervision bureau, the local Dahe News reported on Tuesday.
It’s believed that the epicenter of the outbreak is the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, the capital of neighboring Hubei province. The market boasted a wide variety of live animals for sale including poultry. It was closed on January 1 and remains so.
While much remains unclear about this new coronavirus, it’s believed to be transmitted from live animals to humans, making Chinese wet markets a possibly risky place to do your shopping, though as of now no markets have been linked to the outbreak apart from Huanan.
The virus can also be spread via human-to-human contract, as evidenced by 15 medical workers in Wuhan becoming infected while treating patients. So far, more than 300 people have been infected by the virus in China with six of them dying.
