Shanghai has reported another new domestic coronavirus case — its second of the week — once again arriving from Hubei province.
The patient is a 47-year-old woman from Wuhan who accompanied her husband to Shanghai for medical treatment last week, according to the Shanghai Health Commission.
Surnamed Ke, the woman arrived via high-speed train at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station last week before taking metro lines 8 and 10 to their hotel on South Xizang Road.
Ke then went with her husband to the hospital. She passed temperature checks and showed her green health code. Back on May 8, she had tested negative for Covid-19 in Wuhan along with her husband.
Because her husband needed to stay in-hospital for surgery, Ke remained with him. This Monday, the hospital gave the couple nucleic acid tests. The following day, the tests came back positive for Ke and negative for her husband.
After a CT scan, double-checking, and expert consultation, Ke was listed as a confirmed case on Wednesday morning. She has been put into quarantine at the Shanghai Public Health Clinic Center.
Health authorities have tracked down four of Ke’s close contacts and put them under observation. It’s unclear how closely she interacted with others at the hospital.
This case comes after another confirmed one that was reported in Shanghai on Monday in the form of a 21-year-old student from Hubei province that came to Shanghai for an internship. Previously, Shanghai hadn’t reported a single confirmed case since March 2.
The new trickle of cases can’t help but spark concerns about the situation in Hubei province and Wuhan.
Formerly the virus’s epicenter, Wuhan had claimed to be virus-free before last week when a small cluster of cases was discovered at one suburban residential community.
Afterward, local officials vowed to test all 11 million residents. So far, the city has found 58 asymptomatic carriers of the virus.
