Tragedy struck on Sunday in central China with eight primary school students drowning in a river in the outskirts of Chongqing.
According to an initial investigation, the kids had been playing at a riverside beach on Sunday afternoon when one of them fell into the water.
To try to save their friend, the rest jumped into the river and ended up drowning as well.
The kids were reportedly completely unsupervised during their visit to the beach. They were all from the same school in neighboring Sichuan province.
Around 200 rescuers were dispatched to the river. It took until the following morning for them to recover all the bodies.
Further investigations are underway.
