Among those dead from a tragic bus crash on Tuesday in China are five students and the vehicle’s driver.
Footage of the incident shows the apparently out-of-control bus veering across at least five lanes of traffic before smashing through a guard rail and plunging into a reservoir in Anshun city, Guizhou province.
Rescuers managed to find 36 people in the water, 21 of them dead. It’s not clear exactly how many people were inside the bus when it crashed.
On board were at least 12 high school students who had just finished with the morning session of China’s nationwide college entrance examination. Five of those students died.
The cause of the crash has not been determined. The driver’s death will make the cause even more difficult to discern.
It’s been reported that the driver had been driving the same bus for the last 23 years.
The bus was completely submerged after plunging into the reservoir, which is around 10 meters (33 feet) deep where it fell in. Footage from the scene shows some passengers swimming to shore shortly after the crash.
