Shanghai's inaugural Fête de la Musique went down this past weekend, and what little we did manage to catch of the free music fest was sensational. Taking place at the cavernous 800 Show space on Changde Lu, a near capacity-crowd turned up for an evening of free music provided courtesy of the Institut Français.

Photos: Three hour Artists Brawl = canvas chaos
A big shout out to the folks at Dyce Productions who, for roughly three glorious hours last Saturday night, withstood the rain and converted an unfinished warehouse space at 800Show into Shanghai’s first Artist Battle. The show featured a mix of curious onlookers, frantic artists, expressive medias, lots of paint (both of the aerosol and oil varieties), canvases galore, 10-meter long calligraphy scrolls, flowin’ freestyle rap, hip-hop dance performances, copious amounts of social lubricate and even a hair dryer!
Interview: Artist Battle organizer Bree Harrison
Tired of stuffy Bund art shows, the confusing maze of M50 galleries and artists you’ve never heard of but prices that make you think you should? Prefer cheap booze, slammin’ music and artists doing their thing live and in the flesh? Then we think it’s time you were introduced to Bree Harrison, Executive Producer of Dyce Productions, and her idea of artistic hand-to-hand combat.
800SHOW: Logging on to creative hubs
From Tai Kang Lu to M50 and beyond, Shanghai is abuzz with creative parks and hubs. One of the most recent to spring up, 800SHOW, is a one-time steel factory spanning 20,000 sqm in the heart of Jing'an District. This week, we caught up with logon, the architectural firm behind the renovations, to get the inside scoop on 800SHOW and understand this interesting side of Shanghai’s never-ending urban development.
Around Shanghai: Mad discounts, hairy crabs, fashion and cotton candy
- Discounts! Bargains! Deals! This week there apparently a glut of savings at Plaza 353 where dozens of stores are beginning to offer promotions and steep discounts in anticipation of the impending national holiday [City Weekend]
- We'll need those savings if we're going to enjoy this hairy crab season. Reports have come out that prices will be about 10% higher than last year because of bigger crabs and higher water quality. [Shanghai Daily]
- In the mood for a classy night out living it up with the fashionistas but don't want to spend a lot? The Frau Ana fashion shows combines a party, fashion, and no cover this Friday. Oh, and there is allegedly free cotton candy. Sweet. [Shanghaiist]
