Typhoon Morakot news roundup

Despite weather reports that Typhoon Morakot would swing by our way (which triggered a rush of preparation for floods and damage) it... simply didn't. Yesterday was rainy and gross, but not any rainier and grosser than Shanghai weather normally tends to be. The same could not be said for other areas around Asia.

This time last year, many people were prevented from going home to celebrate Chinese New Year with their loved ones because of the deadly winter storms. This year, it's the global economic crisis that threatens to dampen the holiday spirit for China's 200 million migrant workers, many of whom are now jobless as factories are shut down and jobs are cut. Kimberly Lim of Reuters speaks to a Shanghai-based couple who are unable to fork out enough money to return home to neighbouring Anhui province. (On a totally unrelated note, we found it interesting to see a cross adorning the wall of their small, bare room.)

His name is Chen Jun. He's 18-years-old. And he was captured this morning in rural Anhui province, hundreds of kilometers from Shanghai. Some, actually most, facts are vague: In addition to cash and a laptop computer police say belonged to the victim Diana O'Brien, Chen was allegedly carrying "a weapon." We're also somewhat puzzled by this sentence: "The statement said police narrowed down suspects to Chen after they received reports that a medium-sized man was spotted riding a bicycle near the victim's residence." Police tracked this medium-sized Chinese man with a bicycle from Shanghai to Zhejiang to Anhui. The Shanghai Daily story says Chen confessed to the murder and claimed it was a robbery gone bad, which basically falls right in line with how police framed the incident from the first time they spoke on the matter. The story also says Chen could have at one time worked at a restaurant near O'Brien's apartment complex, reported to be Jinseng Plaza, 490 Zhaohua Road (which seems to be in Xuhui District, not Changning District, or Chongming Island, as was previously reported). We also learn that O'Brien "was found stabbed to death in her apartment building's stairwell" early Monday morning. We hope more pieces of the investigation puzzle will arrive soon. Foreign media all seem to have the same vague details so far. You can find two Chinese TV reports here and here. [Previous Shanghaiist reports here and here]

This tornado, captured here on video, ripped through Lingbi County (灵璧县) in landlocked Anhui Province last Friday at 2:20pm for about 5 minutes, tearing away 650 houses, damaging another 1,000, killing one person and injuring another 45. While there has been relatively scant media coverage of the tornado, over 20,000 people have been directly affected by the tornado. In 2005, a similar tornado killed 15 in the same county.

So you might have heard that Jackie Chan (成龙) recently went to Australia to bury his father, who died of cancer at the age of 93.Well, what you might not have known is that Jackie Chan's father Charlie, aka Fang Daolong, had a whole other family (Jackie's mother was his second wife) that he lost touch with and then had to leave behind in 1949. There was an article called "Enter the Parents" written a few years ago that gave some of the background. The video above covers some of the same ground, but was made more recently, as it mentions the thorny issue of why Jackie doesn't want to get in touch with his half-brothers Fang Shisheng and Fang Shide, especially when their father died and there was a funeral to attend. The interviews also broach the question of whether or not they are revealing their identities so openly now in hoping of getting some of Jackie's (and his father's) money. To this question they reply that it would be a lie to say that they aren't hoping for some help (university tuition, jobs for the young uns) but are NOT coveting Jackie's wealth. The video is in Chinese.

What would you do if you paid a shitload of money to study at some college, thinking it would legit and all, only to be told that your diploma would not be recognised after all? We don't know about you, but we would definitely riot. Well, that's what some civilian students at the Hefei PLA Artillery Academy did a few days back. And it turned out to be a very bloody incident. Iron doors were...
