Gallery: "Moeifying" trend turns China map into manga
Have you ever wondered why older generations always seem to think younger generations are crazy? Allow us to explain by presenting a simple example: whereas elderly Chinese have always envisioned China's map outline as resembling a rooster, the latest online trend (no doubt cooked up by young rapscallions) has been turning the map of China into an assortment of saucy anime characters.
Watch: Chinese animators blatantly copy entire Japanese cartoon from the 90s
This is taking China's shanzhai animation to an entirely new level. Watch a synchronized, scene-by-scene comparison of Japanese cartoon Hikarian (铁胆火车侠 in Chinese) that aired in the 1990s, with a Chinese cartoon called "Bullet Train Boy" (高铁侠) made for release this year by Shenyang Animation.
Photos: Nerd Nirvana at the Comics and Games Expo
The 7th Chinese International Comics and Games Expo held at the China Pavilion was a smorgasbord of color and hyperkinetic noise, featuring dozens of exhibitors representing a variety of corners of respective toy, anime, and gaming universes. Children turned out in droves with parents in tow to sample the delights of their favorite fuzzy creatures in the flesh, and cosplay devotees nerded out with several thousand of their spiritual peers, with a sheepish tango involving posing and picture-snapping taking place throughout the Pavilion.

Cinematheque: New blockbuster Astro Boy wiping out the original? (and other film news)
And so yet another Americanized 3D version of an old animation classic crashes upon us. This week Imagi Studio's version of "Astro Boy," the superhero story that originated as a manga in 1952 by Osamu Tezuka, sees its worldwide release. And with the release of the movie, a huge marketing carousel filled with toys, books and video games starts spinning as well. It raises some questions on how to actually best do our old classics justice.
Cinematheque: New manhua movie from the master of Hong Kong comics (and other film news)
This week Shanghai Cinemas are pleasing us with a new movie from the man called "Hong Kong's King of Comics", Wong Yuk-Long, also known as Tom Wong. Therefore, we'll use this week's Cinematheque as an excuse to go through some 漫画 (manhua) history.
Cinematheque: An old anime classic revisited (and other film news)
Heres a little something for all of us anime fans! Doraemon: Nobita to Midori no Kyojin Den, (Nobita and the Green Giant Legend) the latest movie about Fujiko F. Fujio's manga robotic cat, will hit the silver screens of several Shanghai cinemas this week (starting today, Friday). Of course, in Japan it has already been running for over a year (it was released on March 8, 2008) but we shouldn't complain. Earlier this year the movie was nominated for the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year, but got beaten by Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea.
Shanghai photographer Ariana Lindquist wins prestigious award
Amsterdam-based World Press Photo earlier this month announced the winners of its annual photo contest, the world's largest and most prestigious for press photography. Shanghai-based photographer Ariana Lindquist, an American who shoots for the New York Times, TIME and other publications, won first prize in Arts and Entertainment for her portrait of a girl in an anime costume at Shanghai Stadium. We think the least all Shanghaiist readers could do is buy Ariana a drink (that's one drink each, not total). Way to go, Ariana!
