Tomb raiders and copycatters, oh my! Over 90% of antiques in China are illegal
While the Culture office continues its work reclaiming "stolen antiques" from abroad, it's facing just as big a problem with theives and counterfeiters back home. According to one analyst, 90% of antiques in the Chinese market are either fakes or state-level relics stolen by tomb raiders. In fact, these national treasures that robbers unearth have become a "new currency of bribery in China" with many going to either "foreign countries or corrupt high-ranking officials in China." The reasons for tomb theft: poverty of the surrounding area buffered by the new popularity of antique rating roadshows. Something to keep in mind the next time you're wandering around Dong Tai Lu.
