Beijing Airport's new Terminal 3 the largest building in the world?

Beijing Capital Airport's spanking new Terminal Three opens this Friday. The Norman Foster-designed building is being touted as the largest building in the world. And it is colossal. To give you an idea of just how big it is, the terminal is the size of 170 soccer fields put together, and that is 17 percent more floor space than all of London Heathrow's five terminals put together! The terminal is shaped like the character 人 which means people, and its design reminds one of the dragon, complete with 'scales' oriented south-east to capture as much of the winter sun as possible. more ›

Arrrrrrrrrrgh!

Arrrrrrrrrrgh!

Chronic pain. Debilitating illness. There's little fun to be had from these subjects. So hats off to Shanghai Daily and its over zealous/under zealous/possibly nonexistent subs' desk for throwing a hyperbole cherry bomb in to the toilet bowl of one individual's suffering. The following, which featured in Friday's paper, is best if you imagine it's being read by Peter Cushing: STABBING. Gnawing. Burning. Severe pain can rip your life apart and make you pray for... more ›

More mega IPOs and new airline routes to the US

More mega IPOs and new airline routes to the US

China Construction Bank’s A share began trading yesterday. The ¥6.45 IPO closed at ¥8.53 , a whopping 32 percent gain, eye popping in any Western markets, but here in China, a big yawn. Two other smaller companies went public on the same day, both advanced 200 percent plus, cha-ching! CCB was the largest China IPO to date(¥58 billion), but that title will soon belong to Shenhua Energy, the nation’s largest coal miner. The offering attracted a record ¥2.6 trillion(USD $355 billion) of funds looking to buy shares. The actual amount raised, based on projected ¥37/share and 1.8 billion shares offered would fall somewhere in the neighborhood of ¥66.6 billion, still a lot of zeros. more ›

Hope for cheaper flights out of China?

Hope for cheaper flights out of China?

OK, we've never heard of East Star Airlines before, but it has just become the first private airline in China to be authorized to operate international flights. A Xinhua report tells us that under Civil Aviation Administration of China regulations, new airlines may apply to operate international flights only after three years of operations. East Star has been in business less than two years, but it beat rivals Okair, Ueair, Juneyao Airlines and Spring Airlines to be the first. Hmm... we wonder what made them bend those rules! more ›

Shanghai-to-Atlanta a 2008 hopeful

Shanghai-to-Atlanta a 2008 hopeful

Hot on the heels of United Airlines being awarded a nonstop route linking Washington, D.C., and Beijing, Delta Air Lines has started campaigning early for the 2008 China-US flight path — we're not sure why there appears to be a one-route-per-year limit on these things. Anyway, here's a bit of the story: more ›

This Week In -ist: Elsewhere in the Gothamist Network

We don't know about you, but it's friggin cold out there. Well, not for some of you. It seems as though places that are supposed to be cold are warm and places that are supposed to be warm are cold. Or maybe that's just us. Either way, we're freezing. more ›

Shanghai: The heart of rock and roll is beating?

Shanghai: The heart of rock and roll is beating?

If you've recently moved to Shanghai and you like live music, you don't know how good you've got it. Sure, the scene isn't great yet -- some might argue that it isn't even good -- but at least there is a scene. Two years ago, maybe even a year ago, we couldn't say that. But now there are live music offerings almost every night of week here, and things are only going to get better. We watched Norwegian indie-rockers The Mayflies (not to be confused with The Mayflies USA) play at Live Bar last night, and they were great -- a legitimate band we would have paid to see at one of our old haunts back in Atlanta or Athens, Georgia, where we were never wanting for quality live music. more ›

Extra! Extra!: Shanghai Disney, taxi flight, and panda pricing...

  • While no real progress has been made in cementing a deal with Disney, Shanghai continues its game of one-upsmanship with Hong Kong--our fair city's proposed site (only 6km from Pudong airport) is eight times the size of Hong Kong's park.
  • Chinese women play U.S. to 0-0 draw in Algarve Cup.
  • Have you noticed how hard it is to get a cab these days? Officials say soaring gasoline prices and Shanghai's growing public transportation network have cut into drivers' profits, leading many of them to quit.

Extra! Extra! Airlines, steamed buns and 'pricey' noodles

  • If you drive a Mercedes Benz S Series W220, we highly doubt you are reading this website. but if you are, your car is at risk of a gas leak and has been recalled.
  • In airline news, American Airlines' prices for US-to-Shanghai flights are not as low as we reported earlier, but they are still low: "The cheap seats are available at $625 from Chicago O’Hare and $675 from Atlanta, Boston, New York LaGuardia, Newark, St Louis, and Washington D.C. Flights from Dallas Fort Worth will cost $680." Tickets must be purchased by March 10 and they are good for flights leaving the US between April 2 and May 1. Return flights must be made before June 30. Also, United Airlines wants to fly to South China. And Continental Airlines desperately wants in on the Shanghai gravy train.
  • Who could possibly be "shocked" that half of China is "suffering from second-hand smoke"?

Skype 'optimistic' about future in China

Skype 'optimistic' about future in China

In the latest news that may affect Shanghaiist's calls across the Pacific, Skype claims that it is in discussions with "Chinese operators" and is "optimistic" that SkypeOut will launch in China soon (we're not really sure what launching would entail, since we can already use SkypeOut here). Skype's chief also suggested that a supposed Skype-blocking-system released by a company in Atlanta is nothing but "vapourware." Ouch! The Financial Times has the story: more ›
