The curious stares of onlookers at the public pool: PRICELESS

Shanghaiist is usually not one to promote bands... mainly because we just haven't seen any lately that we like... but we were in Beijing this weekend and caught a show by Beautiful Pharmacy, a folksy band consisting of two Chinese and two Kazakh musicians (insert Borat joke here... or not). We talked briefly with one of the members who mentioned they would be in Shanghai this weekend playing at 4Live. We immediately thought this show would be perfect for our readers; Shanghaiist was certainly put in a trance and found ourselves tapping our feet despite ourselves. Most of the songs we heard over the weekend were in Kazakh... or whatever language they speak over there. The crowd leaned heavily on the hippie side (this being Beijing) but their hypnotizing music should appeal to everyone.
is a hit. It's getting rave reviews, grossing millions, and definitely the most quotable thing we've seen in ages. But Borat seems to have missed most of the -ist cities, and we were all wondering how the film would have been different if he'd made his way around the world on the -ist tour.
As fall settles in and another calendar page gets turned, thoughts turn from bbq's and vacations to holidays and the realization that '06 is coming to an end. With all that going on, with change in the air, we wonder what is it that made that makes the -ists ponder?
