The Steelers face off with the Packers in the Super Bowl this year and the game kicks off at 7:30am on Monday morning (Shanghai time.) Because of that fortuitus convergence of Super Bowl with the CNY holiday, there will thankfully be far fewer people heading to work drunk around noon on Monday. We mentioned a few places to watch the game in our Weekendist, but thought you guys could use a better roundup of all the breakfast and booze deals. For all bars listed below, I'd recommend getting there as early as possible if you want a place to sit.
Where to watch Super Bowl XLV in Shanghai
Gary Heyne, Shanghai restaurateur and Boxing Cat Brewery brewmaster, passes away
The news that Gary Heyne, beloved co-owner of one of our favorite microbrew/food establishments in Shanghai, came as an incredible shock this weekend. Gary leaves his family - wife San San and daughter Gracie - behind. His family has requested that he be interred in Texas, so Boxing Cat Brewery is now holding a fundraiser to help with the funeral costs and offer assistance to his wife and child.
Our five fave new Shanghai watering holes of 2009
Shanghai has an ephemeral nature: with the breakneck pace of modernization, it seems like the city is a little bit different every day, changing right under our noses. With all that constant progress comes an ever changing cast of cultural venues: every year, we find our favorite places to rest and relax going the way of the collective farm, only to be replaced with entirely new and fascinating ones that catch our attention. We spend a lot of our time exploring the great things our city has to offer, especially the ones that serve us alcohol: to top off our year of intrepid boozing, here's a list of our favorite new bars, clubs and lounges that have popped up over the past year.
Cantina Agave: Hallelujah
The wait is over. We've finally found a Mexican restaurant that has satisfied our too-long simmering desires for big hearty burritos, soft fish tacos, chunky guacamole, and a selection of salsa both sharp and subtle. The new Cantina Agave, located on the Fumin side of the new Mansion complex on Changle Lu, has brought the California-style Mexican fare we fell in love with back home to Shanghai, wrapped up in reasonable prices and a much appreciated focus on authenticity.
