Director Song Zude on the civic consciousness of Hong Kongers

"90% of Hong Kongers take public transport. According to the Guangdong Daily, over 12 million bus trips are taken in Hong Kong every day. Most car owners and even rich people take buses. However, many mainland car owners can't imagine losing their faces and want everyone to know that they have cars. They even drive just to cover a few steps, and don't take the subway even if there's a station right outside their door. Does one really need a damn car to prove one's wealth? I think, we should learn more from Hong Kongers when it comes to civic consciousness!" more ›

Lines 925B and 146 have both begun forecasting bus arrival times by tracking progress along their stops, flashing updates on LCD tickers when the bus is two stops away, one stop away, and about to arrive. more ›

The bus then careened into a tricycle, overturning and killing two people. 29 people were injured (including the truck driver), two seriously. The bus was not a tour bus, as Shanghai Daily reports, but rather a long-distance passenger bus, according to Xinmin. Video: Shanghai bus driver bullies old man, throws his stuff off the bus

The video below captures a scene from bus 81 in Pudong last week that has sparked massive controversy online. It shows an elderly bottle picker who, after paying his fair and bringing his bags on board, is shoved around and yelled at by both the driver and a male passenger as they try to throw his stuff off the bus. The passenger continues to scream at the old man as the bus eventually moves forward, accusing him of stinking up the bus and inconveniencing others. At the next stop, the passenger grabs one of the bags and pulls it off the bus, tearing it and scattering the contents. The old man is left scrambling to pick up his livelihood before the doors slam shut. more ›

Shanghai cutting bus lines, forcing residents onto metro

Shanghai cutting bus lines, forcing residents onto metro

Shanghai has begun scaling back its suburban bus routes, canceling lines and changing some so they terminate at a metro stop instead of going all the way into the city. City traffic authorities say that changes to 283 routes (out of a total 1,165) will help reduce congestion in the city. Residents have begun complaining, saying they are being forced to ride the metro, sometimes paying both bus fair (2 yuan) and metro fair (3-5 yuan) to get into the city, where once only a single bus sufficed. But eventually Shanghai transportation management actually hopes to increase, not decrease, the number of bus routes in an effort to increase the number of commuters using public transportation (currently only 30%.) The changes now are aimed at consolidation and efficiency. more ›

Expats to Shanghai: Speak more English!

Expats to Shanghai: Speak more English!

It seems as though, despite the various efforts to spread English in the city before the World Expo, expats are still having trouble communicating in Shanghai's taxis, buses, shopping venues and elsewhere. Of the over 200 foreigners living in Pudong and Hongqiao that were interviewed, roughly 49% said they were dissatisfied with cabs for not speaking English, and 34% said they weren't happy with buses (34% of foreigners take buses? Get out of town!). Surprisingly, the one thing we would've thought was most important for practitioners to know English - medical care - only garnered a 15% complaint rate. more ›

Entrepreneurial Chinese bus drivers and the things they do

Entrepreneurial Chinese bus drivers and the things they do

In this news report from Hunan TV, police opened the luggage compartment of a crowded long-distance bus bringing passengers eager to return home for the Spring Festival and found a huge surprise -- eight people were hidden inside, tucked inconspicuously behind suitcases and packages. With buses and trains fully booked out, and legal tickets hard to come by, some entrepreneurial Chinese bus drivers are welcoming the opportunity to make a quick buck from those desperate enough to get home in time. One young man that was caught in the luggage compartment told reporters that nobody forced them to do this and they were more than willing to travel this way. [h/t Youku Buzz] more ›

Kunming bus blasts 'man-made, deliberate sabotage'

The three consecutive bus explosions in Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, and nearby Minshan that killed three people and injured 14 this morning were "cases of man-made, deliberate sabotage", according to a spokesman from the Yunnan PSB. According to Reuters, the Kunming blasts "came two days after Yunnan police opened fire and killed two rubber farmers in the province's Menglian county in a clash that also saw 41 police officers injured" and so there is the possibility that the explosions were related to the clash. Meanwhile, Mr Li Jiheng, deputy party chief of Yunnan, has been flown in to investigate the clash. More updates to be available by our friends from GoKunming. more ›

The torch is coming to town!

The torch is coming to town!

That's right, lots of road closures, stronger than average nationalistic fervour, and even more tat being sold on the streets than normal can only mean one thing: the moment we've all been waiting for is here! The international leg of the relay might have been less than harmonious, and it might be three days later than originally expected (following an understandable postponement for this week's official mourning period), but tomorrow [Friday] will see the Olympic torch hit the streets of Shanghai. more ›
