The city traffic authorities now have an electronic map about local traffic information online located at www.jt.sh.cn/shanghaimap/index.html. It's supposed to give out info on subways, railways, long-distance bus stations, airports and roughly 77 local tourism sites PLUS booking numbers of local taxi companies and regular cab fares. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work quite right yet. The site has a lot of links, but most of them do nothing when you click on them. So uh... here's some links you can use instead to calculate your taxi fare, figure out subway lines and understand bus routes. You're welcome.
Shanghai's English transportation website not quite up to snuff
Shanghai bus stops IN ENGLISH!
It's always disheartening when we, bristling with overconfidence from our mastery of taxi-taking and subway-riding in Shanghai, try getting on the bus and realize it is nowhere near as easy. Though the subways now have English and taxis are plentiful, navigating Shanghai's sprawling public bus system is an endless source of confusion.
Figuring out Shanghai's bus system just got marginally easier
Buses are everywhere and go everywhere in this city. But for those of us less familiar with the system, it can be tough to puzzle out which ones we can actually use. Well... did you know that Google Maps now shows exactly where the various bus lines running around the Shanghai area stop? Even though ditu.google.com is in Chinese, it's bound to be a great resource for anyone who lives more than a ten minute walk from a subway station. Hurrah!
Get free transport and entertainment info at major Shanghai Metro stations
Shanghai Metro passengers can now access free transport and entertainment info at major Metro stations, now that the Shanghai Metro Guide has launched. The pilot scheme allows users to send a station code to a free number: 10658028. A website address is sent back and tells you close by bus lines, maps, shopping centers and restaurants. Sounds like you would need a slightly more advanced phone to use this service, but it should be a super useful addition to the city come World Expo time. Source: Shanghai Daily
