Cal Kitchen: Going back to Cali? I don't think so

Cal Kitchen: Going back to Cali? I don't think so

Someone told us recently that there was a new Mexican burrito place called Cal Kitchen that opened up not that long ago on Dagu Lu, and being long-time residents of California, we decided to see if it lived up to its billing as place for authentic Californian/Mexican food. Long story short, it doesn't. We ordered a big chicken burrito that in better days, might have been a contender—but as it was, it was a soggy... more ›

Sic 'Em! College football Sunday in Shanghai

Sic 'Em! College football Sunday in Shanghai

Yep, it's that time of year again: When Americans here try to explain to everyone else why we place so much importance on college athletics, namely football (the version where you don't use your feet too much). If you'd like to try to understand, or if you would just like to tell college footballs fans how silly you think they are in person, head out to Bubba's today. The first full Saturday of college football games is going on right now in the good ol' US of A. And Bubba's will have a couple selected games playing on tape delay on Sunday. Chinese Farmers in the Gamedom

Some call this next generation outsourcing. Some call it sad. While Shanghaiist agrees that some of these "farmers" are likely being taken advantage of, our many visits to internet bars around China have shown us that millions of Chinese boys and young men would spend most of their waking hours playing online games whether they were getting paid for it or not. We learned of this transgression from Slums of Shaolin (blocked in China), a blog about Shanghai. Top Dog, according to a Shanghaiist contributor who did his undergrad work at Cal-Berkeley, is an "East Bay institution." Basically, that means lots of students get drunk or high and eat Top Dog hot dogs late at night (one location is open until 3 am). In Shanghai, across from Fuzhou Lu, we have Mac Dog, and while the silly name is different, the logo is exactly the same. (They all kind of look like Mr. Hanky to us.) If you are still not convinced that Mac Dog is a rip-off of Top Dog, check this out: more ›

Labor disputes on the rise

Labor disputes on the rise

don’t know is that in China, the statutory period regarding this type of grievance is only 60 days: meaning you only have 60 days from the day you are aware of a contractual violation regarding your employment to lodge a formal complaint with the labor board or even take legal action in a court of law (yeah, good luck on that one). Once the 60 day window has passed, neither the board, nor the court will even hear the matter, and the chance of your winning anything is effectively nil. more ›

Fudan to students: You're still screwed if you screw

Fudan to students: You're still screwed if you screw

Just not as much. Shanghai's Fudan University inched just a little bit closer to becoming the Cal State-Chico of China recently, as school officials will no longer immediately expel unmarried students who have sex, the Shanghai Daily reports: more ›
