Shanghai experienced an electric night of punk rock this past Saturday as Carsick Cars and P.K.14 shared a stage with Brooklyn-based These Are Powers at Zhijiang Dream Factory. After Carsick Cars sampled some songs from their new album, show-goers were surprised to find These Are Powers playing, leaving P.K.14 to headline the show. Regardless of lineup, all three bands delivered an intense show in the Factory that was gritty, energetic and altogether rocking.

So if last weekend was all about local bands for local people, this weekend is dominated by wai di ren. Whether it's "ghost punks" from some little hamlet in the US of A, northern monkeys from the capital or a band from the harmonious region of Xinjiang, there's a distinct outsider flavour to the next couple of days.

These Are Powers, an American collaboration between ex-Liars bassist Pat Noecker, singer Anna Barie and drummer/producer Bill Salas will be hitting Zhijiang Dream Factory as part of a Maybe Mars lineup with P.K.14 and Carsick Cars on Saturday.

Yep, this weekend is a big 'un. We probably spend an inordinate amount of time in YYT anyway but, if it wasn't for the Antidote Festival down in Zhujiajiao, we'd probably just camp out in Tianshan Park this weekend.

It's been a good two years since Beijing-based punk rockers Carsick Cars released their first self-titled album on the Maybe Mars label. Since then, they've been written up in the foreign press, they were handpicked to open for open for Sonic Youth (though, sadly, the government stepped in there and pulled them out), and they've headlined the JUE Festival... and still, up until just now, there's been no music video!

While rock is currently experiencing a revival all over this country, the spirit of revolution inherent in the first generation of Chinese alternative music is noticeably absent.

                                

It was raunchy and raw, rockin' and raucous... and now it's over. The two night line up this weekend started out on Friday with Shanghai-based pop-rockers Pinkberry, DJ Sacco and an amazing set from Beijing's Demerit - easily one of the best bands on the alternative scene right now. And on Saturday, Maybe Mars outdid themselves, bringing us AV Okubo, Snapline, Ourself Beside Me and Carsick Cars. Special thanks to Split Works for bringing us two weeks of artistic mayhem. French electro-rock group We are ENFANT TERRIBLE, who rocked LOgO last Friday, are doing a special encore show tonight at Yuyintang to end their China tour. Check them out for a repeat of Friday Fun... without the crowd. And don't forget to be there for the end of the JUE Festival this weekend, with two nights of killer acts at Dream Factory. Details:

Just one week in and 2009 has been largely dull, grey, and wet. Thankfully then, the good people at Split Works have put together a ten day long festival of art and music to warm our cockles - starting today. According to the organisers, Jue Festival is "an excuse to leave your hidey-hole and experience a punk show, an art installation, and everything in between", which sounds pretty good to us. The festival (which is also taking place in Beijing), will showcase some of Shanghai's best creative talent and is hosting a diverse set of artists and performers.

Christmas is over, and like many others, Shanghaiist is still nursing a hangover from all the holiday cheer received on our trip back home. Lucky for us, we came back at a perfect time, with many exciting gigs coming up in January. Here is a look at the shows we don't plan on missing out on......

Snowboard pros from around the world converged on Beijing's Nanshan ski area this winter for the Nanshan Open, battling it out for $25,000 in prizes. Sexy Beijing correspondent Rachel Dupuy headed out to Nanshan to see what's going on with China's newly forming snowboarding scene. Featuring music by Beijing band Carsick Cars.

After a long and wild New Year's break, things have slowed down on the music front and it seems that everyone is still trying to shake off their extended hangovers. Luckily, this weekend there isn't much happening, but if you are able to push yourself off the couch then head to 4Live (yes, it is still open!) where there are a couple of shows this weekend. On Friday, Beijing stalwarts, Catcher in the Rye, give us a peek into China's Rock past, circa 1992... when rock was new and bands were few (making sentences that rhyme is cool!). For fans of Snapline or Carsick Cars check out Papier Tigre, from France, at 4Live on Saturday. If you aren't able to make either show, then we suggest you rest up because it looks like 2008 is going to be a great year for live music in Shanghai.

We have never actually experienced or even witnessed a person's ears bleeding from a live show, but last night we were pretty damn close. Thursday, the Ex-Models put on an interesting show of sharp, sonic blasts for a small 4Live audience. If you happened to miss it, no worries, the band will be joined by Carsick Cars and Torturing Nurse on Saturday at Yuyintang. Carsick Cars has enjoyed a stellar year, opening for Sonic Youth at 3 shows in Europe and they look to continue their climb with a few major European festival invites for 2008.

As the weekend starts Shanghaiist is giddy with excitement. Not because this weekend is overly exciting (though there are a few good shows out there), but because this weekend marks the unofficial end of the summer music drought. Next week Coolio and Avril Lavigne with both be in town (where are our media passes?), AK-47 along with Brain Failure and Top Floor Circus will hold a special pre-1234 Beach Rock party and the following week the SUBS will be back in town. September gets even better, though Shanghaiist will be in Beijing to catch the New York Dolls, NIN, Mando Diao, PE and Markey Ramone, Shanghai shouldn't feel left out....the Exploited will be playing at 4Live in September in what will be a shat (replace the a with an i) kicking good time. Ok, enough of what is coming in the near future, let’s get down to what is happening this weekend.

For those of you headed to the Shanghai Concert Hall tonight to see Sonic Youth, above you'll see a little taste of what you can expect.

With Harley's Bar accused of stealing equipment and Hong Doudou no longer interested in hosting live music, the Shanghai underground rock scene has moved from Xujiahui to Yangpu District. Last night's No Beijing concert marked the official opening of Live Bar, a medium-sized venue in a quiet neighborhood near Fudan University. More than a hundred people, mostly students, showed up -- which was surprising considering the lackluster turnout at previous events.
