Shanghai sees 2.45 million tourists for May holiday

Those who stayed in the city for the May holiday, did it feel more crowded to you? According to Xinhua, it was - since more than 2.45 million tourists decided to make Shanghai their holiday destination. That's about 20,000 more tourists than last year. Despite the crappy weather, these intrepid travelers trekked out to downtown Puxi, the Pearl Tower and Century Park in droves. Other fun statistics: On May 1, the Shanghai railways handled over 1.27 million passengers, over 2,700 people left from Pudong International Airport on between 7 and 8:30am, and at least 50 people missed their flights because of traffic jams due to road construction.

3D cartoony maps of Shanghai

Ever wanted to look at Shanghai through the lens of one of those older Sim City games? While we've discovered this 3D map of Shanghai before, James Fallows over at the Atlantic brought it to our attention again (it has been two years since we last swooned over it, after all) and we've re-realized how cool it is. It's called Edushi.com

A fireworks technician died yesterday in an explosion in Century Park, Pudong — and he wasn't even lighting any fireworks. 26 year old Pu Jiliang from Henan province died on the spot at around 12.30pm when he was loading onto a truck near the gate of the park. Fireworks displays by Russian, Japanese, German and Chinese artists had been scheduled at Century Park for Sept. 30, Oct. 3 and Oct.6 as part of the National Day celebrations. No other casualties have been reported and the police have not furnished more details surrounding Pu's mysterious death.

An unexpected foray into Pudong's Century Park last week turned up a rare gem of a random activity for a warm afternoon: electric boating. At just 40 kuai per boat per hour it's too much fun to pass up. These boats travel at approximately the same speed as an old Shanghainese woman walking backwards, but you shouldn't let this deter you from setting sail. With a few friends, a backpack full of Reeb, and your best pirate costume the situation is ripe for some high-impact bumper boating*. The sleek stingray style boats go forward and in reverse, seating two, while the bigger battle cruisers (pictured above) can seat up to four seafaring types.

Although this issue has been covered before, the Century Park subway station on Line 2 became the first station to use solely automatic machines to distribute subway tickets last week. Shanghaiist decided to see what all the hubbub was about by heading over to Century Park subway station to check out the the subway station sans manual ticket booths, replaced by two very large self-service machines. Although the station still maintained its service counter, all...

Via Mad About Shanghai, who thinks this pic was taken at Century Park in Pudong.

Those of you in the know may have heard that new ticketing machines are making an appearance on the Shanghai Metro system. Yesterday, Shanghaiist passed through the Century Park station and witnessed two new ticket vending machines that include the option to recharge your stored-value card straight from your bank card, unpacked but not yet in use. Awesome. These new machines are being added at selected stations around the city.

What’s that old Chinese proverb? “If you’re going to change something, just do it bit by bit -- never all at once.”

Now that our personals site is up and running, we have once again been reminded just how many hot chicks women this fine city of ours has to offer (single or otherwise), and getting in shape has skyrocketed on this Shanghaiist's to-do list -- just below finally getting around to watch Lost. With our new found enthusiasm for anything workout related, this article , “Shanghai’s top 5 jog spots”, in the latest issue of City Weekend piqued our interest.

"Visitors in Shanghai are allowed to shoot hoops with Yao Ming, play football with David Beckham and Ronaldo, and sing with Hong Kong pop music band Twins."
