Robert Deniro opens up shop in Shanghai

Robert Deniro opens up shop in Shanghai

Not sure how long this clothing store has been in existence on the northwest corner of Shaanxi Nan Lu and Changle Lu, but we just noticed it on Sunday. The Chinese characters on the sign — 兴昌祥服饰 — means "auspicious, prospering and flourishing clothing." Mr. Deniro's entry into the Shanghai market is further proof of what Shanghaiist has been writing about the actor ever since his 1965 debut: He's been riding Liv Tyler's coattails his entire career. more ›

Live Music: Start of something beautiful

As the weekend starts Shanghaiist is giddy with excitement. Not because this weekend is overly exciting (though there are a few good shows out there), but because this weekend marks the unofficial end of the summer music drought. Next week Coolio and Avril Lavigne with both be in town (where are our media passes?), AK-47 along with Brain Failure and Top Floor Circus will hold a special pre-1234 Beach Rock party and the following week the SUBS will be back in town. September gets even better, though Shanghaiist will be in Beijing to catch the New York Dolls, NIN, Mando Diao, PE and Markey Ramone, Shanghai shouldn't feel left out....the Exploited will be playing at 4Live in September in what will be a shat (replace the a with an i) kicking good time. Ok, enough of what is coming in the near future, let’s get down to what is happening this weekend. more ›

Band Bio: Public Kingdom for Teens (PK-14)

Band Bio: Public Kingdom for Teens (PK-14)

This being the first (hopefully many more comin') quickie band profiles, Shanghaiist chose one of the bands we respect the most. A band with name steeped in adolescences nostalgia, with music that has some of the most mature lyrics you will hear in China (and OMG, they, like totally sing in Chinese). Public Kingdom for Teens, aka PK-14, is a band that has been labeled everything from punk to progressive rock, but we prefer to categorize them under the broad banner of alternative rock. more ›

Face to face with Parking 2.0

Face to face with Parking 2.0

We were taking an afternoon stroll down Xiangyang Lu today in our pajamas when we had our first ever encounter with Shanghai's high-tech parking meters. The meters aren't exactly new; according to the Shanghai Municipality website the first were installed in 2005. There were 141 meters at the beginning of the year installed across 22 road sections, but that number is now up to 555. more ›

Is the new Arch a knockoff?

Is the new Arch a knockoff?

We've heard a lot of buzz about Arch opening up a new place on Changshu Lu near Changle Lu. And we had friends who were looking forward to smoke-free Mondays and Wednesdays within walking distance from home. Too good to be true? Seems to be the case based on this email sent out to the aFuturePerfect mailing list by Arch owner Frank Steffen: more ›

Join Shanghaiist at the Family Flea Market on Saturday!

Join Shanghaiist at the Family Flea Market on Saturday!

We enjoyed last month's Family Flea Market at Garden Books on Changle Lu so much that we booked a table for this month's incarnation of the mostly-outdoor event, which takes place tomorrow (Saturday) from 2-5 pm outside in the bookstore's -- you guessed it -- garden. There's a section that is kind of indoors, as well. Look for the table with the Shanghaiist banner and perhaps a really cute dog. We'll be selling our custom-made Shanghaiist T-shirts for the dirt-cheap price of 50 kuai (that's 10 kuai off the already-low suggested retail price of 60). Shanghaiist contributor and photographer Peijin Chen will also be at our table selling some of his excellent photographs. There may be some other surprises, as well -- and we hope to also have a cooler full of beer. more ›

Has decent Greek food finally arrived in Shanghai?

Aegean occupies the villa vacated by Cantonese restaurant Secret Garden. The location was also one of the spots considered for the new Tang Hui. And it may or may not be a good place to buy stuff for expectant mothers. more ›

Center of Shanghai: Where the hell is it?

Center of Shanghai: Where the hell is it?

Back in February, Wired Magazine ran a story on the center of the USA according to Google Maps. The -ist network of sites, being geographically organized, was quick to pick up on this meme, giving us the center of New York and of Washington D.C.. more ›

Where to get a great massage in Shanghai

Where to get a great massage in Shanghai

Oh sure, Shanghaiist goes to the red light "hairdressers" for a nice long wank just as much as the next guy (as long as the next guy has never been once), but we also like experiencing what you "norms" have at the massage parlours of Shanghai -- a massage. We have a new favourite place. At the north east corner of Changle Lu and Shaanxi Lu, behind several medium sized trees is a set of two buildings inside which unlimited massuers will pour out of holes in the walls to beautify you in any way you see fit (Map from SmartShanghai). more ›

To be clear, Lisa Movius hates this website

If you came to Shanghaiist based solely on Lisa Movius' recommendation found on page 8 of the November 4, 2005 edition of SH magazine, STOP READING NOW. Lisa would want you to. Lisa's plug for this website was a misquote, and she is very embarrassed by it. more ›

Say goodbye to Tang Hui

Say goodbye to Tang Hui

If you don't already have plans for some Halloween party somewhere in Shanghai tonight, Shanghaiist suggests you head on over to Tang Hui Pub. In fact, just bring that costume along and go to Tang Hui anyway. This well-loved, hard-rocking bar is having its goodbye party tonight. We mean goodbye as in see you later, at a different, larger and more central location. Shanghaiist also reported back in September on some of the other reasons behind the move. more ›

You gotta fight, for your right (to quiet)

A friend of Shanghaiist collects hammers. She has dozens. Every time that a workman in her building begins knocking in nails at 3am, she strides down to the offending apartment and confiscates his tools. This happens a lot. more ›

Spotted at the Bund: half of Anhui Province ... oh, and Ed Norton

Spotted at the Bund: half of Anhui Province ... oh, and Ed Norton

Shanghaiist wasn’t joking when we said yesterday that the city was crowded. Thousands upon thousands (upon thousands) flocked to the Bund last night for ... well, for no apparent reason. There was no display of fireworks -- that happened on the Friday night -- no entertainment, no access to the riverside promenade. Nothing. Just lots of inflatable hammers. more ›

Tang Hui Pub getting shut down!

Tang Hui Pub getting shut down!

What was that NWA song again? "Love Tha Police"? "Truck Tha Police"? "Funk Tha Police"? Well, whatever it was, that song came to mind when Shanghaiist learned that every hipster's favorite Shanghai bar -- Tang Hui Pub -- was being forced to shut its doors. "We're in a quiet neighborhood, and the police are always coming in," explained bar owner Zooma, who is also the soulful and spasmodic frontman for the band Xingfu 13, which kicked ass last Friday at the Shanghaiist launch party. The bar, located on tiny Xingfu Lu in Changning District, will close sometime in November. more ›

Everybody is kung fu fighting (are they fast as lightning?)

Everybody is kung fu fighting (are they fast as lightning?)

It’s a known fact, kung fu is cool. Any dude that can take on 20 bloodthirsty enemies at once earns the respect due a master warrior in our book. So why not enjoy a free exhibition of local kung fu shi fu's at The Summit, September 17. Don’t be fooled by the flyer's picture of old, peaceful men in pink pajamas doing taiji quan, as Ivy Zhang of the Mandarin House assures us, they can still kick-ass: more ›

Two scoops of frozen poop, please!

Two scoops of frozen poop, please!

In an announcement that should come as no surprise to anyone who has tasted the stuff, China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has confirmed that Chinese-made ice cream is bad ... really bad ... and potentially harmful to your health. A muddled China Daily story about the report says that Chinese ice cream has an approval rating of 52.6 percent -- not very good, but still about 10 points better than President Bush. more ›
