Man climbs to top of Waibaidu Bridge over "family issues"
Earlier this morning, at around 6:30am, a middle-aged man climbed to the top of Waibaidu Bridge in the North Bund. According to the Huangpu police, the man lives in Changning District's Tianshan Village and climbed to where he was because of "family conflicts." Dong Fang reporters say that he was carrying a sign saying "Please protect me, public security bureau (请公安机关保护我)" and that his beef was with a family property dispute. Police stopped traffic to the bridge and persuaded him down at around 7:20am. A picture of the man here.
Yue 1525: Dim sum lunch at decent prices all week long
While there is much dim sum to be had in Shanghai, it's hard to find some place that's both easy on the wallet and still pretty enough to impress. While Yue 1525 (not to be confused with the multitude of other Yues out there) may have some service issues, it's come the closest of any Cantonese restaurant so far to having a perfect balance of good price and good atmosphere.
Reminder: Shanghaiist Scrabble tonight!
- From 6pm to 10pm, we'll be hoisting up our giant scrabble board and inviting everyone to engage in cunning word play. Rules rehash:
- Each Happy Hour drink gets you five tiles. You can wait until you've got a couple orders under your belt - heck, we're not putting a limit on how many tiles you can come up to the board with - but just know that someone might take that triple word score from you if you wait too long.
- We'll be using the SOWPODS dictionary. If you don't know what that means, don't worry too much about it.
- You can come up to the board as many times as you like between 6pm and 10pm. But you can't make words consecutively, you'll have to wait until at least one other person has tried first.
Bars: DADA opening for real now
A new Changning district bar will be rounding out a trifecta of cool places to go on Xinfu lu (the other two being, of course, established indie outposts LOgO and Anar): it's called DADA and it's the pet project of Antidote dude Michael Ohlsson.
Eileen Chang's old grade school site rescued!
In a stroke of great news for historical architecture enthusiasts and fans of Shanghai jazz-era fiction, it looks like Eileen Chang's old middle/high school has been saved from becoming another set of skyscrapers!
