Mailbag: Shanghai's poor, misunderstood expat male sluts

Every now and then we get an email from a reader that is just too bizarre to keep to ourselves. Just today, we had a reader who found himself so inspired by the controversy surrounding Chinabounder that he decided to write about his own experiences and send it in to us. We couldn't resist sharing it with you! more ›

Whew! Well, folks, the NPC is finally over, and what a party it was! Well, it wasn't quite as fun as C-Span, but after all the sanctimonious sloganeering, we were pretty excited about the New Socialist Countryside, Harmonious Society, Peaceful Development, growing the economy and creating win-win situations for mutual benefit. more ›

Western scoundrel returns: Chinabounder is back!

Blogger versus blogger lawsuit settled

Blogger versus blogger lawsuit settled

Shanghaiist mentioned China's first blogger versus blogger lawsuit several weeks ago, and since then, the case has been pending and we haven't heard much about it until just now. To refresh your memory, Shen Yang accused blogger Qin Chen (real name Zhang Ming) of libelous, defamatory remarks about him on his blog. Zhang Ming is a recent university graduate and said that Shen Yang started it, and that people who've been trolling the blogosphere enough know that Shen Yang is an arrogant asshole who deserved whatever criticism he received. When the case first started Shen Yang wanted 100,000 RMB and 30 days of public apologies, but according to this report (in Chinese), Shen Yang did win the case, but all he got was 1,010 yuan for public notarizing fees and an apology that Zhang Ming must put on his blog. more ›

Chinabounder unbound? An update ...

Judging from the comments on our first post on Chinabounder's now infamous Sex and Shanghai blog, there seems to be some who believe that the entire thing is a hoax. Everyone, it seems, wants to know who Chinabounder is -- even the BBC,which emailed Shanghaiist's editor asking for the scoop on Chinabounder. Bloggers often seem omniscient, but we're not, or at least not in the way that God is. more ›

So, this guy has lots of sex and writes about it on the internet

What better way to spend a windy, rainy day than reading about some guy's sexcapades on a blog? OK, there are many better ways, but maybe this site will be of interest to those of you still upset they took the soft-core porn channel off the Filipino satellite service. The site is called Sex and Shanghai / 欲望上海 (you'll need a proxy to access it in China) and we have a feeling you can guess what it's about. It's like Penthouse Letters, but localized. Here's an R-rated and, as a friend just said, "icky" taste: more ›
