The awesomely informed music mavens over at China Music Radar have sniffed themselves out a delicious piece of news that ought to be shared (especially as a warning to anyone writing about China's music industry): Ayi Jihu, recently the feature of a That's Shanghai spread, not to mention reports on Sky News, The Daily Mail, and even The BBC, was touted as the Chinese "Madonna," a poor dishwasher turned major Chinese RnB star... only barely anyone in China has heard of her.
China Music Radar: Who the hell is Ayi Jihu?
Jay Chou makes Fast Company's "100 Most Creative People in Business" list
In a list populated with movers and shakers such as Eddy Cue of Apple (who basically made iTunes) and Shiro Nakamura of Nissan (the inventor of the first major electric-only car for everyone), there sits Jay Chou at no. 70. The Asian music mogul is touted for his success as a singer-songwriter, which he has parlayed into a career in other media - including directing and acting.
Thursday Timewaster: Literal translations of Chinese songs
We're not exactly who's behind these literal English translations of Chinese songs, but they seem to have gained quite a following! Youku user Ouzi (欧子, which could be literally translated into "Euro kid") has 27 videos of literal translations up on his page. The most recent one, about Chinese children's songs, was published 8 hours ago but has already garnered over 20,000 hits.
Ticketmaster China kicks the bucket
Ah, the beleaguered state of show promoters here in Shanghai. According to China Music Radar, Ticketmaster's China operations were "officially shelved" last week. The company had only just bought high-profile upstart Emma Entertainment in 2007. That merger, Emma Ticketmaster, managed to screw up safety at an Avril Lavigne show, failed to bring Oasis, did an okay job getting John Legend here and then spluttered to a halt in May 2008. CMR has a history lesson on the soap opera antics of its foray here in China which is well worth reading... and a lament about the state of ticketing/promoting now that this option, as messed up as it was, is gone.
Tuesday Timewaster: The ultimate Jay Chou song
Yes, we realize Jay Chou's music all sounds the same but we love him anyway. Heck, even this mashup of fifteen (FIFTEEN!) of his songs sounds pretty good to us. Where can we get the mp3?
Video: What Happy Girl Zeng Yike sounds like when sung well
One of the most controversial entrants of the new Happy Girls, the reincarnation of that uber popular Pop Idol-like show Super Girls, has been Zeng Yike.
Video: Long March done Jay Chou-style
Here's an interesting mash up between a Cultural Revolution-era Long March opera and "Ninja" by Jay Chou, created - if the video's to be believed - by Lee Tang (李唐) from Lu Xun Academy of Fine Art two years back. Is the song choice supposed to be a little ironic, considering one of the parties the Long March ended just around the beginning of the second Sino-Japanese War?
Chinese Music Top Ten: The Olympics, The Earthquake and Jay
Netease has released a "Top Ten Musical Singles" list, compiled from the data generated from its 200 million or so Chinese users. So what have the Chinese been listening to a lot this year? Unsurprisingly, Beijing Olympics songs, Sichuan Earthquake songs and... Jay Chou. In fact, he was so popular that his album, Capricorn, mysteriously took 7th place on a list of "singles."
