I've been a little wary about reporting on the whole Red Army meme, mostly because it's super old - at least since last year, the musical version of this Red Army Long March opera has been cut and recut to match everything from Jay Chou to Michael Jackson. But you know what? Everyone in the world seems to be watching it, loving it and debating what it means for China's youth to treat this kind of opera in this way.
That Red Army Opera meme hits Lady Gaga's Pokerface
Jin Xing Dance Theatre and the concept of beauty: an intense joyride of dance, dance, dance
Jin Xing herself greeted the audience from upstage in the wide theatre. The auditorium was barely half filled, but that didn't bother the choreographer, "I'm interested in quality not quantity. Ten years ago when my company performed in this exact theatre, the room was filled. Back then I gave away tickets to everyone, so it was easy to fill it up. Now, I don´t give away one single ticket, no one from the government gets anything, cause I love quality of the audience!"
Simple script, shallow plot, but still quite charming - It's not theater, so call it by its name!
Recently "Tale of 4 Cities" launched it's weekly dinner "theater" series, a Thursday cabaret evening with the vision to impart a bit of "Le Gai Paris" into Shanghai´s nightlife scene. The problem is, if you're looking for actual "theater," the show invariably will seem like it doesn't fit. It's a drag show, pure and simple - and a charming one full of social potential - so you might as well just call it by its proper name and put it in its proper genre.
