- After six hours of surgery, a pair of 4-month-old conjoined twins were successfully separated yesterday at the Shanghai Children's Medical Center. The twins shared a liver and pericardium, but thankfully each had their own heart.
- Supposedly somebody somewhere is thinking about extending the 48-hour transit visa length in Shanghai. They wont tell us when or for who or how long, but hey, here's hoping!
- And hey, did you guys know we have a 48-hour transit visa on arrival in Shanghai?

CNNGo hurts Huangpu district's feelings with list of world's worst tourist traps
Okay, while we don't particularly enjoy spending much time getting accosted with "bagswatch" offers and shoving ourselves through throngs of Chinese and foreign tourists, I wouldn't call Nanjing East Road the WORST tourist trap in the world. But that's exactly what CNNGo has labeled it - Number 4 to be exact. What is far more entertaining than the list itself, though, is the reaction from Huangpu district, whose feelings were clearly hurt. From Want China Times:
Hubei manufacturer of century eggs raises a stink over CNNGo's list of revolting foods
China's largest egg producer, Hubei Shendan Healthy Food Co, is unhappy with CNNGo's placing of century eggs on a list of "most revolting" foods from around the world. The company has apparently filed an official complaint with CNNGo's parent company, CNN itself, demanding that it apologise for calling the century egg a "revolting" food.
Datong Mill: Shanghai's new underground Tongren Lu?
Well, what do you know: CNNGo feels like it's found the new Tongren Lu (now that the old one as been, so to speak, Expo-ed)... and it's actually the only underground bar street in Shanghai. Called Datong Mill, you'll see the same bored looking bar girls sitting at similar tacky looking bars, though it's even more crazy: here, not only is everything splashed with a dash of Venetian flair, there's also a giant Eiffel/Tokyo tower hybrid marking the spot.
Shanghai Leyi: An NGO that protects male sex workers in Shanghai
There's a lot of articles out there on China's female sex workers, but what about the males? Xing Zhao of CNNGo has an amazing piece about Shanghai Leyi, an NGO that provides support to male sex workers in the city. The group assists between 2000 to 3000 male sex workers (of the estimated 1 million to 10 million in China) per year, ensuring they have access to health care and protection. "We just want to create a better environment for sex workers,” says Zheng Huang, the founder of the NGO. “They’re still people, they have rights.”
CNNGo gets its own site redone too!
Just a week after we noticed City Weekend's latest revamp (and commented on how similar it seemed to CNNGO's), it looks like CNNGo went and redid their own site too! When's our revamp coming along?
City Weekend's site got a revamp
Sometime over my vacation, City Weekend did a complete face lift on their site. And now... it looks like a blog!
Jay Chou is one of Asia's most influential
Brush up on your superlatives, because there may have just been a shift of power: Jay Chou has been dubbed one of Asia's 25 most influential individuals or groups by CNNGo.
Yiwu, the Christmas capital of China
With only nine short days before Christmas, it's time to start shopping for gifts, if you haven't already. If you've got a long list of things to buy, and a little bit of extra time on your hands, it might be a good idea to skip the already crowded fake markets and head for the city of Yiwu. CnnGo has a great pictorial on the small market town just two hours outside of Shanghai which sells just about everything under the sun, albeit in bulk. The pictures make Yiwu look like the happy version of Santa's workshop: toys neatly piled and waiting to be opened by happy children around the world, bearing no resemblance to the harsh and soulless factories they escaped from just in time for Christmas.
We're kind of a big deal
Or so it would seem from CNNGo’s most recent Shanghai Hot List of 20 people you should watch. Both former and current editors, Kenneth Tan and Elaine Chow, made it to the rankings, which also include such Shanghai notables as the founder of Dianping.com and Yao Ming. How or why they've been listed alongside the founder of Dianping.com and Yao Ming we shall never know - however, since they're not ones to check the mouth of a gift fame horse (or so the saying goes)... Thanks CNNGo! If you see them around town, feel free to ask for an autograph
but please, no pictures.
CNNGo's 50 reasons why Shanghai is the greatest
CNN's new web-based travel experiment, CNN Go has collected 50 reasons why Shanghai is the greatest city in the world. Yeah, we too like brunch and Mao memorabilia and outdoor ballroom dancing (though we're not sure how unique they are to Shanghai, exactly), but we noticed at least one thing missing from the list: awesome city blogs and their adorable editors. *ahem* Check out the rest of the list here.
