Did we ever tell you how much we love Meiwenti Productions or Juan Vargas' slapstick, pervy sense of humor? We were there for the epic Swat Chicks set in sci-fi Shanghai. We walked out thinking WTF!!! (but in a good way). And we giggled and guffawed through last year's Short Erotic Film Awards.
We remember how psyched we were when we first got our hands on Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), so we're absolutely thrilled at this piece of news: Ghostface Killah is coming to Shanghai on June 14 (after stopping over in Beijing the day before)! And even better, he wants local talent to share his bill with him. So if you're an MC or DJ or singer with aspirations to open for one of the biggest acts in hip hop, head to the Douban/Splitworks contest site. Competition begins on May 14 and will end on June 9.
...@samgaskin, for his hilarious (and kind of sexy!) tweet: "I’d buy Natalie Portman 2 tattoos. On her left thigh RITZ & her right CARLTON but I’d use retroactive ink so they’re in Closer" as an answer to Ctrip's question: If we gave you 1,000 RMB to spend, what would you do to show the world your appreciation to the Ritz Carlton for your amazing free stay? We knew that movie was good for something! Congrats, and enjoy your free weekend stay at the Portman Ritz Carlton's sweet Club Executive Suite (worth around 15,000RMB). And thank you Ctrip!
Ctrip is hosting a Twitter competition to give away the sweet prize of weekend stay at the Portman Ritz Carlton’s Club Executive Suite (worth around 15,000RMB) and guess who's the guest judge? Everybody's favorite city blog - that's right, us (and don't you try to tell us differently). All you have to do to possibly win your stay at the Ritz is to answer this question from Ctrip: "If we gave you 1,000 RMB to spend, what would you do to show the world your appreciation to the Ritz Carlton for your amazing free stay?" as awesomely as possible. It can be funny, it can be touching, it can be plain weird - just Twitter Ctrip something 140 characters long that will make our eyes pop. (While you are at it, follow us on Twitter, too.)
Looks like Pepsi Co.'s bringing that old tradition of “Battle of the Bands” to China in a big way - the soft drink maker is hosting a mega reality show and its inviting all Chinese “underground” rock bands to participate.
The guys from Meiwenti Productions are back with the 6th instalment of their Shanghai Short Film Contest to be held in three years. So budding directors, start getting out your lights and cameras and start shooting. The deadline for submissions is November 25 and the awards ceremony will be on December 8 at a yet-to-be-disclosed location. And... since "6" is the devil's number, the organisers have decided that this will be a horror-only fest. Looks like some people haven't had enough of Halloween!
Okay, Shanghaiist has got several hundred blogs on his RSS that he scans through everyday. Some things scream at us, others are quickly forgotten and yet others are hidden in some corner of our brain for (mostly useless) information ready to be used at some future point in time. There are all these bloggers that you've never met personally that you can form an impression of only after a long period of reading their blogs. You're reading them every single day, and sometimes it almost feels as though they're your friend, even though you don't really know them. It's most surreal.
Our Shanghai champions that went to the finals of the Cocktail World Cup held in Queenstown, New Zealand, have come back and done us proud! Unshaken by an itinerary that included some really extreme cocktail shaking via bungy-jumping, on top of a mountain and on a jet boat, Cross from Vault and Alex from Volar (together with Johnsen from Aria in Beijing) emerged fourth after Teams Vegas, New Zealand and England. Okay, so they weren't tops but it appears they did manage to wow some of the biggest mixologists around like New York cocktail king Dale DeGroff.
The emergence of China as a commercial superpower is, by some way, the most important economic phenomenon of our time. In the last few years, analysts of the global economy have had to rewrite their computer models and recalibrate their slide rules to cope with the People's Republic.
For too long, many domestic TV entertainment channels have profaned music and the notion of competition by giving top honors to tomboys or sissy boys for being what they are - boyish girls and feminine boys - NOT for what or how they sing. The realm of music (which if not sacred should at least require some talent) suffered most when Li Yuchun, a tomboy whose voice was the weakest of all the finalists in a national singing contest in 2005, walked away with the "Super Girl" championship. Shi Yang, a boy who dances like a young woman, became a hot idol during the "My Show" contest in Shanghai last year.
In a report just released an hour ago, Reuters tells us that Shanghai housing rights activist, Chen Xiaoming, who was one of seven Chinese activists awarded the 2006 Housing Rights Defender Award by the Geneva-based Centre for Housing Rights and Evictions, "has died hours after he was released on medical parole".

Shanghai is fast becoming George Costanza’s dream city. First, there is a sandwich craze that is sweeping through town and now the 34th Annual Miss Bikini International Pageant is being hosted by our fair city. Yesterday at Taipingqiao Lake in Xintiandi, there was a promotion for the festival that included Julia Liptakova, last year’s winner and Yang Lei, the runner up.

2200 years is a long time to get around renewing anything, but we say better late than never. Forget the seven wonders of the ancient world, it's time, in the 21st century, to let the people of the 42nd century know what we consider to be the seven wonders of the world. The Great Wall of China is one of the top 10 finalists:
According to the most recently published data, on May 7, the top 10 were the Great Wall of China, the Acropolis in Greece, the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza in Mexico, the Coliseum in Rome, the Eiffel tower in Paris, the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu, Petra in Jordan, the statues on Easter Island, Britain's Stonehenge and the Taj Mahal in India.Continue reading "Will the Great Wall be one of the New Seven Wonders of the World?"
Wuhan Science & Technology Institute recently co-sponsored a Graduate Fashion Week in the city to showcase the talents of some 450 graduate students from all around China. Likely making this event the first major level graduate fashion week in China.
The back cover of yesterday's Xinmin Evening News featured the photograph to the right accompanied by an article centered on Mr Ding, a worker who has been employed at Shanghai historic Jiangnan Shipyard for 42 years. The reason that the photographer wrote the article is because he finally got the chance, through a photography contest, to tour the limited-access factory that was founded in 1856. And the reason that the newspaper published the article is that the factory is set to be moved to a new location; the buildings are being repurposed to serve as logistics, administration and public service bases, and supermarkets for the 2010 World Expo Park.
Shanghaiist has a lot of guys on the staff (for a reason we just can't fathom — we really want more female contributors). So, naturally, a tip posted in our Shanghaiist Forums about Shanghai playing host to an International "Miss Bikini" Competition caught our attention.
While browsing Digg for no reason in particular, we discovered something that appeals to two of our great loves, namely the environment and dodgy drawing. Yes, combined they form a cartoon competition aimed to promote environmental issues in China. It is only open to university students, and entries close on the 20th of May 2007. The winners will be announced on June 5th, and will receive cash prizes and the always-prized 'certificates'. You can learn more about the event, aptly-titled the 2007 University Cartoon Contest on Environmental Protection, via the China Daily website.
We'll keep this quick. It's beautiful outside and half-price beers await.
