Bad news for those of you who were tantalized by our pictures of The China Digital Entertainment Expo and Conference (referred to as ChinaJoy) last year. Shanghaii Daily reported today that the government bureaus in charge of the convention decided to place more emphasis on gaming than on cosplay and sexy outfits this year.
Shanghai to ChinaJoy nerd expo: Be less sexy!
Photos: Nerd Nirvana at the Comics and Games Expo
The 7th Chinese International Comics and Games Expo held at the China Pavilion was a smorgasbord of color and hyperkinetic noise, featuring dozens of exhibitors representing a variety of corners of respective toy, anime, and gaming universes. Children turned out in droves with parents in tow to sample the delights of their favorite fuzzy creatures in the flesh, and cosplay devotees nerded out with several thousand of their spiritual peers, with a sheepish tango involving posing and picture-snapping taking place throughout the Pavilion.

ChinaJoy, the annual gaming convention that's supposed to be China's version of E3, has hit Shanghai today! The 8th China Digital Entertainment Expo & Conference opened its doors at Shanghai New International Expo Center, where it will stay til Sunday. Like every year, this one was chock full of press conferences, game developers, game seminars and exhibitions - but we know what all you non-nerds were really hoping to see:
Chinese internet idol Furong Jiejie appears... in cosplay?
It's been a while since we've heard anything about Furong Jie Jie (i.e. Sister Hibiscus), the internet celebrity who shot to fame by being... supremely confident in her own looks. Well, she's popped up again now! Recently, the super popular blogger was spotted in a costume show in Shanghai with Japanese AV model Sora Aoi!

Sichuan quake area hosts gaming site
A site where cosplay enthusiasts can act out the online game Counterstrike, has been set up close to the ruins left by the Sichuan earthquake. According to the site's manager Dai Jun, the area's collapsed buildings make a good setting for the game. People in the area have protested against the park, but Dai Jun, quoted in Xinhua news says that the bereaved will find consolation in the reconstruction of tourist attractions, rather than in prayers alone. "How to restore the local tourist market and benefit the local villagers should be at the top of the agenda".
Shanghai photographer Ariana Lindquist wins prestigious award
Amsterdam-based World Press Photo earlier this month announced the winners of its annual photo contest, the world's largest and most prestigious for press photography. Shanghai-based photographer Ariana Lindquist, an American who shoots for the New York Times, TIME and other publications, won first prize in Arts and Entertainment for her portrait of a girl in an anime costume at Shanghai Stadium. We think the least all Shanghaiist readers could do is buy Ariana a drink (that's one drink each, not total). Way to go, Ariana!
