Counterfeit money crackdown uncovers over 1 Billion RMB
Smaller counterfeit bills increasing in number
People's Daily reports that the number of smaller denomination fake bills has increased sixfold since 2005. However, the overall amount of fake money in circulation is decreasing: a ten month crackdown by the government has seized 684 million counterfeit yuan so far. To avoid suspicion, counterfeiters have begun to make more fake 50 and 20 yuan bills, which are less likely to be checked for authenticity. Most of the fake money is made in Guangzhou and distributed through Henan and Hunan, so it seems that Shanghai is at less risk. Fake RMB: a new plaything for Shanxi kids
Counterfeit money in Asia is not just a fantasy fictionalized by that Jackie Chan atrocity film Rush Hour 2. It is a real situation. Very real.. and usually very problematic. One reason why you won't find denominations over 100RMB here: the government hasn't found a way to make sure it'll infiltrate the population without getting counterfeited up the wazoo.
