Last weekend BEAN held their first ever Shanghai bike crawl. After outfitting participants with day glo vests, they hit the sauce then hit the streets on a five-hour boozy bike-a-thon from Kaiba in Jing'an down to the new Kaiba in Tianzifang. Proceeds went to helping kids in wheelchairs and giving things like diapers and books to children in need.

If you’re able to drag yourself away from the Asian Games on your teevee at home (I’m assuming you all tuned in yesterday for women’s judo, badminton tourneys, men’s chess, and of course “Latin Jive” dance-offs) then we’ve got you covered with our weekly list of whatever brouhaha is going down around town this Monday through Thursday. In the line-up this week: premature Christmas bazaars, another one of those neat Shanghai photography nights, a clown on a bicycle, and some free booze!
Biking Shanghai: Puxi cycle map
The Crash Test Dummy Video Blog features videos of bike journeys around Shanghai. Recently they have been chewing over the same problem as Shanghaiist: Bought a good bike, Shanghai is great for cycling ... keep running into no-bike dead spots. Good for us, they have just released their first version of a Puxi cycle map.
Dates to watch out for: Mid-Autumn Festival, Special Olympics and the Shanghaiist Halloween Party!
Ever thought of what you're doing to offset your carbon footprint? This Saturday, instead of driving your car or taking a taxi, why don't you try taking public transport, cycling or walking instead? Residents will be asked to avoid driving private cars within the Inner Ring Road, and while compliance is not mandatory, driving will be banned outright in some areas.
Beijing 2008: Come for the Olympics, but don't stay for the smog
Gold, silver, bronze? Nah. According to Bloomberg.com athletes the world over have smog on their minds when it comes to the quadrennial Olympics competition next year in Beijing. Gunn-Rita Dhale, Norway’s reigning world champion for women’s mountain biking had this to say about her future host city,
Spend Summer '07 on the back of a bike
If you’re like us and already feel slightly guilty at how much you will be drinking at this Friday’s Shanghaiist Happy Hour, maybe it’s time to start thinking about how to have an active summer? Whether you’re a cycling veteran or you’re just looking for something to do to these coming months, there are a number of bike trips available to see more of the beautiful countryside (or Suzhou Creek).

Have you seen this bike? Or how not to become a victim
It finally happened. Sometime between the early evening last night and this afternoon, Shanghaiist's bicycle was stolen. Yes, it was locked. Twice. And no, we did not bring it into our apartment, to the collective shock and incredulity of our landlord and the retired woman that minds the front entrance of our apartment block. Shanghaiist had naively believed that the four flights of stairs we schlepped the thing every time we used it (almost daily) would be enough to deter what few opportunists found their way into our building in a “safe” part of town. But ultimately, one of the immutable truths of Shanghai life prevailed. Your bike WILL get stolen.
Beijing Tigers could win China baseball crown today
The Beijing Tigers are gunning for a sweep today in their best-of-five China Baseball League championship series with the Tianjin Lions. Game 3 starts at 3 pm today at Beijing's Lu Cheng Stadium. A win would give Beijing its third consecutive CBL title. According to the league website (English version) today's game will be broadcast by Beijing Television, and Shanghaiist admittedly has no idea whether we get that channel in Shanghai or not. We'll be surfing the channels at game time, and if we find the game we'll post the channel info here. (UPDATE: We can't find the game on our TV, not even on BTV-1. But we did find golf, cycling, badminton, archery, tennis, bull fighting and, yes, the Teletubbies.)
