Deep down, somewhere in the heart of the orchid-like construct we all know as the Oriental Art Center, a creative meeting between masters recently took place. Scotland's leading choreographer and dance icon, Alan Greig, led a workshop with Jin Xing Dance Theatre, one of the most prominent dance companies in our city. Both performed at the recent Shanghai Dance Festival - the fourth one ever held.

Shanghai's Jin Xing Dance Theatre collaborated with Korea's Won Kim Group in a performance inspired by the film Il Grido (The Outcry) at Shanghai Theatre Academy on Friday night as part of the ongoing 2009 Shanghai Dance Festival.

Cinematheque: China's lost gen dance off in cinemas on Thursday (and other film news)

The old ladies and fellas you see dancing in the parks in the morning, China´s "forgotten generation", rarely gets a chance to be the central subject in Chinese movies. Director Ye Kai is now presenting an exception to that rule, by creating a feel-good comedy about a charming group of elderly amateur dancers, caught up in a quest to win a competition that will let them take part in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

Shanghai Dance Festival opening next Friday

Time to clear your calendar for Shanghai´s biggest dance event, starting Friday next week. Shanghai Dance Festival is here again for the fourth time, hosting some of China's most respected dance artists as well as international celebrities.

Just in time for Chinese Teacher's Day (did you know it was today?) comes this video of the "spiciest" teacher in China: Zhou Sichen. The video was taken in March and shows Zhou, an English professor at Hunan Agricultural University, displaying his mad dance moves to his students.

The Scottish Ballet came to the Shanghai Grand Theatre May 22-23 and the company was kind enough to provide a backstage view. Apparently worried that nobody would believe this party was real, the mysterious hosts of that mysterious warehouse party invited us to check out the venue - as long as we promised not to tell who they were or where it was.

One of the most hilarious things we've seen all week is this: “Most Niu Traffic Police Officer Directs Traffic While Dancing Cha Cha.” We don't know if we really need to say anything more, except to repeat the words of several of the netizens: 顶!(ding)

Christian Bale had a freak out. And then someone remixed it into the most amazing techno song ever. And since he once played a nutty Shanghai expat kid in Empire of the Sun, we think that gives us all the reason we need to put it up here. NSFW

The music in this video shot in rural Henan totally gave us a headache. Steven Lim of Youku Buzz couldn't quite make out whether this was a wedding or a funeral. Well, yeah, as we told you before, things can get pretty noisy and wild at Chinese funerals, with sexy strippers and paper condoms and what have you. Someone needs to fly these girls down to Shanghai and bring them to The Shelter. We're sure it'd be a RIOT.

Scene at Souldancing's 2nd Anniversary Party held on Nov 25 at Servus Vienna. Will someone please tell us why we weren't sent an invitation to this party?

ChinaSmack points us to this silly dance item performed by the employees of the Tianjin Hebei Post Office at the company's annual staff cultural night.

Is it a martial art or is it a dance? Apparently, it's a bit of both. This episode of Sexy Beijing talks to two expats who have made it their mission to introduce the Brazilian sport to the Chinese public.

Shanghai’s #1 Fag Hag has a busy couple of weeks planned ahead. Maybe Shanghai really does deserve the title of 2008’s most improved gay life city

While dancing at the city’s newest gay nightspot, D2, our friends decided that pre-club etiquette in Shanghai is subpar and a little lesson from Miss Manners is in order. Feel free to add anything we missed in the comments section…

Following the news of Brad Ferguson's dismissal as manager of Windows Underground, a recent announcement on Smart Shanghai reveals the new guy in charge of the to be Steve Bamford, a DJ who has been playing "all colors of house" around Shanghai and China for the last four years.

DJ J Walk from djvibe.com played an amazing set at The Shelter last night.

Phreaktion's Sweatshop events at The Shelter have been going strong for awhile now, and this Saturday 5/31 promises to keep the momentum going. Once again, flithy drum 'n bass is on the menu. Headlining is Canada's J Walk:

Last night, Shanghaiist traipsed out to The Wall. Getting there was a little tricky and required our cab driver to get out and ask directions twice. The address of the club might be Riverside Avenue (Binjiang Dadao), but you can access the place only via Fenghe Lu. It took us a little while to figure that out. If it helps, the venue is directly across the street from the Shanghai International Convention Center. Anyway, it's kind of cool seeing the monstrous Oriental Pearl TV Tower so close when you're in the area.

If we had a jiao for every time someone was flabbergasted at the fact that we live in Pudong then, well, we could probably buy lunch. But cool stuff does happen east of the river. And this Saturday night, Union Music DJs Steve Bamford and Carl Lorimer will prove it by hosting a night of house and breaks at The Wall. Located at U1, 2727 Riverside Avenue (浦东滨江大道2727号 广场地下1层) in Lujiazui, this swank new venue boasts a badass soundsystem, some funky seating, and "the longest bar in Asia." Best of all? No cover.

Local techno goons Void are back on a mission to bring you some quality electronic music. Crew chief Cameron Wilson was serious when he spoke about extending his love of techno beyond lao wai. To prove his point, Void is hosting an all-Chinese lineup of serious techno DJs.

Shanghai DJ collective The Lab celebrates their second anniversary this weekend. As a sort of reverse birthday present, they've gifted us with turntablist wizard and mixologist DJ Kentaro. Kentaro is the 2002 DMC World Champion and a two-time DMC Japan Champion, so he knows a thing or two about scratching records. But don't just take our word for it. Kentaro's label Ninja Tune describes him thusly:

On the left there is Matrix, who along with Futurebound rocked the hell out of Club Bonbon with some crazy drum and bass on Friday. More pictures, including a review of the "Punk from Xi'an" show at the Live Bar, after the jump.

What's up this weekend? Plenty of things, but Shanghaiist plans to attend these two events for sure. Friday night, Phreaktion and DJ Siesta bring you Matrix & Futurebound at Club Bonbon. MC Stride does the vocals. From their site:

No, it's not the new dining craze in Shanghai. If you're tired of mainstream house and trance, try giving Infected Mushroom a listen. Shanghaiist guarantees their brand of psychedelic trance will put you in a different frame of mind. To help convince you, the Israeli-based duo performs live tonight at the Tanghui VIP Club. A live set means no pre-recorded songs on vinyl or CDs - this is strictly synths, drum machines, and other instruments, people!

Are you starved for techno? Real, honest-to-gosh techno? Well, Shanghai's Void crew has you covered. Several times a month they fill up LOgO and The Shelter to bring you the foot-tappinest, head-noddinest, neck-snappinest techno you ever could lay ears on. They've showcased both DJ Nomadico and Jason Hodges in Shanghai, and this Saturday March 1st they bring a little bit of Detroit and Berlin to The Shelter.

We've been hearing about the so-called hip hop grannies, but dang, actually watching them getting into their element left us pretty gob-smacked! We're sending this clip to mom because these ladies put up one helluva performance that would make Tina Turner blush... definitely the coolest grannies one could ever ask for!
