Banana Monkey and Hard Queen, two good local bands are putting on a free concert at 4Live tonight, with things getting started at 8:30pm. After that head to the Antidote party out a C's where the music is always good and the drink freakin' cheap. If funk and jazz fusion is more your thing then Finnish Pekka Pylkkanen and his Tube Factory will headline tonight’s Jazz it Up held at the Shanghai Music Conservatory.

We never thought we would ever see The Slits appear on a poster promoting a Shanghai event, but that day has arrived thanks to 88 New Wave who have been quietly putting on offbeat punk parties at Cs Bar. We like their eclectic and open take on punk, enjoying everything from Gang of Four to Salt 'n Pepa.

The sign on the gate that leads to Tang Hui on Huating Lu reads "停止营业" (ting zhi ying ye or "No longer open for business"). Yep, it's true — the new Tang Hui failed to last a year. The bar and supposed music venue closed last week, Tang Hui general manager Morry Morgan confirmed via SMS:

Local digital music collective Antidote is throwing its 17th monthly gong show tonight.

Living for one and a half years in the Zhongshan Park area, we've observed constant and significant improvements. New shopping malls, many good fashion shops, and the Starbucks-factor went from zero to five.

Last night, we got a look at the latest entry in Shanghai's sports bar scene -- The Oval -- and while it is still a work in progress (they will be in "soft opening" mode for the next few weeks) the place definitely shows a lot of promise. It's a new (the wood floor still shines) and huge (800 square meters and two levels) space on Dingxi Lu, near Yan'an Xi Lu, about a 15 kuai cab ride from the Plaza 66 part of town. The Oval has 16 flat-screen TVs and a big projection screen, viewable from the balcony and the main floor, is said to be on the way. There's a TV in the men's bathroom, too -- but what we like best are the private booths with flat screens and couches. You can reserve these areas if you are, say, a poor blogger who can't afford your own flat-screen TV and invite friends over to watch, say, the baseball playoffs after you get back from your honeymoon in Thailand.

For those that think "electronic music" and "live music" are mutually contradictory, you might want to check out C's Antidote night -- August 31st -- when underground techno duo Shanghai Ultra (aka Shanghaiist contributor Cameron Wilson) and Shanghainese DJ MHP bring you a night of old school live electronic music.

Partying on down on a Saturday afternoon may not be your usual cup of tea, but PAUSE is going to show you how it's done. Some three hundred people turned up, mingled about and got high down at the last event which was held at Ying Yang bar in January.
