Remember how we reported that American Airlines was gonna start up a new nonstop Shanghai-Los Angeles route? Well it's finally (almost) here! Starting on April 5th, China Eastern is no longer going to be the only direct flights carrier between the two coastal cities. To sweeten the deal, AA has a special promotional price. Prices for a one-way flight start at 2,617RMB (399USD) from April 5 to May 5 and 2,479RMB (378USD) from May 20 to June 17. You'll also earn double (flying economy) or triple (business and first class) miles if you're part of AA's reward program for travel between April 5 through to June 30. Oh yeah, let's not forget that in mid-May United Airlines will alo begin their direct Shanghai-LA flights. Here's hoping they undercut AA's promotions even further.
Californication: American Airlines will take you straight to LA for 2,479RMB
More direct Shanghai to Los Angeles flights in the works
United Airlines has decided it also wants a piece of the Shanghai-Los Angeles route. Just a week after American Airlines received the okay to begin daily direct flights between Shanghai and Los Angeles, the US carrier swiftly announced it has applied for permission to fly the same route nonstop. So for those of us looking to visit the city of angels, there should be a myriad of options come spring. The AA flights are scheduled to begin April 5 and if United is also approved, their flights will commence May 20. China Eastern better step up their game.

56minus1 takes a look at Shanghai's first ever wooden roller coaster. It'll be built over in Happy Valley at Sheshan, which ought to open some time in July... Also coming in mid-July: regular flights between Taiwan and China! The first direct flight ever, as we know, was through Shanghai.
