We checked out the Krispy Kreme grand opening today on Wujiang Lu, intending to take a few pictures and bite into a few donuts. No dice on the latter, as we were met on this rainy day with an annoyingly long queue of people waiting to get into the store for some donut giveaways. Judging from the huge LCD screen and the confetti and the Jason Mraz blaring from the speakers, we figured we missed out on a pretty ridiculous party. But hey, Jason Mraz and sweet donuts sure seemed to be a winning combination for the smiling Shanghai ayi's we saw leaving the store. Or it may just be free food that does the trick.

Krispy Kreme store spotted in Shanghai
It's been ages since we heard any news of Krispy Kreme, the American donut slinger which was supposed to come to our shores sometime "soon" over eight months ago. But it seems that Cityweekend has now found an actual store - and it says it will finally open in "early December 2009." When it does do its non-specific opening day, the first 200 people lined up at the door will receive a "special surprise." So uh... Krispy Kreme stake out anybody?
Krispy Kreme donuts soon to be available in Shanghai?
Krispy Kreme might be feeling the squeeze in the United States, but fears of bankruptcy hasn't stopped the uber-delicious donut purveyor from entering China. According to Brand Republic, the shop has partnered with BBDO Guerrero to expand overseas and plans to open up 35 stores over the next five years in Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin. Yikes! Even more places selling delicious sugar-glazed fried bread? Be still our expanding waistlines.
Shanghai, it's time to eat the donuts
For those planning on hibernating this winter, it just got easier to add those crucial extra layers of fat. Dunkin' Donuts just opened in Shanghai, much to the delight of Marc van der Chijs and probably many other people. SH mag says, "This is supposed to be store number one of one hundred." SH also suggests our city might be in the midst of a "donut war." Aussie brand Donut King opened this month, as well. Our money is on the Americans.
Kusp of Krispy Kreme?
Remember that post a few weeks back about the growing obesity problem in China? Well let's temporarily store that in a deep, dark place as we rejoice the latest and most concrete indicator yet that Krispy Kreme, our favorite of all decadent donut shops, is finally bringing its fatty treasures to the Mainland.
Donut Factory doesn't fill Shanghai's big donut hole
Nestled in the corner of the Dragon Gate Mall behind the crowded bustle of Cheng Huang Miao and the Yu Garden is Donut Factory, which in its That's Shanghai advertisement that caught our eye last week, heralds itself as the bringer of true American donuts to Shanghai. Donut Factory makes an honorable attempt to elevate the social status of the donut in Shanghai. The glossy white tables, walls, and floors deflected all attention to the little cakes sitting nakedly under the glass counter, worthy of admiration for anyone who appreciates the beauty of this holey invention (which we do).
Dunkin' Donuts coming back to Shanghai
There might be a recession on the way, but American culture is doing just fine. Although we've said nunca más to Taco Bell, but we got the MLB coming our way, Rambo's back in a way that Rocky Balboa could only dream of, and best of all is the surprising news that Dunkin' Donuts is on its way to Shanghai.
