This weekend Shanghai says goodbye to arbuably its most notorious super-late-late-night club, Dragon Club. We've also got Sesame Street Live, which kicked off last night, a pervert party at the Apartment, some electro tunage from Singaporean DJ Clash of the Disko Kids at Shelter, and plenty more! Read on for details, or head over to our calendar for everything else.
Weekendist: Clash the Disko Kids, Sesame Street Live, and Dragon Club bids adeiu!
Live Music: Club 8, Jam Massive and Pecha Kucha
The weekend has arrived and with Chinese New Year looming things have gotten much quieter on the live music front. Friday night Club 8 and Pelle Carlberg, both from Sweden, will bring their pop sound to the crowds at the Shanghai Concert Hall. It had been scheduled for the Dream Factory but due to lack of a proper live music license has been moved. Shanghaiist's interest in this show has been piqued by the oddly high ticket prices. Advanced tickets are selling for 200rmb while those who don't plan ahead (that would be us) can expect to pay 250rmb at the door. Is this band really worth it? Well, we are curious to find out. If you aren't willing to shell out the hefty door fee then we suggest you check out the 9th edition of Pecha Kucha being held at the Living Design Center. Might not include live music, but will definitely stimulate your mind. Either Bai Yun (folk) or Kidney Stone (covers of hard rock) will be playing out at Live Bar... or maybe they are playing together, been getting different information from different people.
La Crêperie: Comfort food for a crappy day!
Shanghaiist has been feeling very French of late. After wondering when Paul was going to re-open and hanging out at Bar Rouge's "Excusez-moi" party... well, we had dinner in La Crêperie - Shanghai's new and so far only eatery devoted to crêpes from the Brittany region.
Is Bar Rouge the 'best bar on the planet'?
A commenter over at Gridskipper seems to think so. Although that same person insists there is "no snobbery" at the bar at Bund 18 and that $7 cocktails are a bargain. Another happy customer says at Bar Rouge you'll find "gorgeous people" and "flaming buckets of champagne all around" -- it's "decadence at its best."
SOCIAList: The people's party girl goes out in the rain
Truth be told, apart from the poorly publicized but highly attended No Beijing concert, there was really not much worth leaving warm, comfy DVD equipped homes for this weekend. Friday night's rain and Saturday's cold breeze signaled an end to the last two-and-a-half weeks of nice weather Shanghai will see until the end of April.
Ping pong merrily on high
China has embraced Christmas. Shanghaiist knows this because last year on Christmas Eve we left a beer and a plate of snacks out for Santa (or his Chinese equivalent, Dun Che Lao Ren), and in the morning they were gone. Unless that was our roommate stumbling in from the Dragon Club at 6 am.
Rock Music and Gaultier: Photos from Saturday
Peijin was out on the town Saturday night with his camera and captured some great images of both the rock show at Hong Doudou and the Jean-Paul Gaultier show at the Dragon Club. Check out his Hong Doudou pics here and his Gaultier shots here. Shanghai Streets took a few photos at the Hong Doudou show, too. Any Shanghaiist readers check out either event? Let us know what you thought in a comment.
