Lou Jing talks to Netease about Oriental Angel, growing up black

China Hush has published its translation of a Netease interview with Lou Jing (娄婧), the half-black Oriental Angel contestant who was the subject of a lot of online netizen character attacks, most of them extremely bigoted.

The controversy surrounding Lou Jing, the half-black Shanghainese girl who recently appeared on DragonTV's reality show "Let's Go! Oriental Angel" made actually curious about the show. We mean, we were curious about the show before, when we first stumbled upon its auditions at the Channel One mall, but now we actually wanted to check it out.

Derby fever strikes the city once again tonight when Shanghai Shenhua cross the Huangpu to take on Pudong’s Shanghai United in the CSL, with both teams looking to get one over their local rivals to make up for disappointing seasons so far.

The show, broadcast live on Dragon TV until August, is like a male beauty contest that began on May 21. We read the rules of the competition, and it seems they aim to select charming men with both ability and moral integrity, to make them the new image of the young generation. We suppose it helps if the guy is hot, too, although that clearly was not the case for Super Voice Girls.

As if you needed us to tell you, it's Oscar night morning. We have one eye on the TV right now -- Dragon TV, and at least one other local network -- are showing a "live"[1] feed of the red carpet coverage from E! (with Chinese commentary). Why not watch on our satellite? Because it never freakin' works. CCTV usually replays the Oscars Monday evening, although we haven't found confirmation of that online yet (anyone out there got the details?). In past years CCTV's coverage has been in English with Chinese subtitles.

Most people climb the Great Wall. Some run up it. A few strange souls ride their unicycles on it. And 1000 saxophonists are planning to gather on it to play their instruments in unison (if you've scheduled an outing to Badaling that day, we strongly suggest a stroll around the Summer Palace instead).
