Threesday: Ladies hit the town

In our ongoing Threesday feature, Shanghaiist takes the time to count out three of....well, whatever catches our fancy that week. And this week it's for the ladies (and single men looking for action). We present you with three ladies nights to check out.

Shanghaiist Happy Hour: Tonight!

With a mere forty-eight hours before the National Day celebration, we figured we'd throw a little surprise party of our own. Come down to Cotton's tonight and celebrate Shanghaiist's "we-hope-we-also-make-it-to-sixty" happy hour party! We're going to party like it's 1949, kick some traditional Chinese jams, and dance the night away with National Day drinking fervor. And like always, two for one drinks until ten!

Pencil This In: Lingerie, Miró, and treasure hunting in the night

This week, realize your inner poet with the Monday Evening Writers, learn about traditional Indian instruments, and catch an exhibit of Spanish surrealism before drinking away your weekend on cheap Long Island Iced Teas.

Philadelphia's Brian Seymour (MySpace) will once again be performing an acoustic set of his original music on Tuesday, June 23 at Cotton's on Xinhua Lu during the Shanghaiist Happy Hour, which runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Seymour is in town doing a series of shows at the House of Blues & Jazz — it's called "The Piano Has Been Drinking" and he's playing, naturally, the piano and singing the music of Tom Waits. For us, he'll be playing guitar and performing songs from his albums.

Reminder: Brian Seymour performs at our Happy Hour tonight

Hope to see you all tonight at Cotton's on Xinhua Lu for the Shanghaiist Happy Hour featuring a live performance from Philadelphia based musician Brian Seymour (MySpace), who is town doing a series of shows at the House of Blues & Jazz (he's playing piano and singing the music of Tom Waits). For us, he'll be playing guitar and performing an exclusive acoustic set of his originals. Based on what's happening outside our window right now, it looks like Brian will be playing indoors at Cotton's, which is fine by us (the speakers are better inside).

Live Music Tuesday: An acoustic set from Brian Seymour

It's been close to three years since Philadelphia based musician Brian Seymour (MySpace) last visited us, but he's back. And he's playing an exclusive acoustic set of his originals Tuesday night at the Shanghaiist Happy Hour at Cotton's on Xinhua Lu. As usual, the Happy Hour runs from 6 to 10 p.m. and features free entry and 2-for-1 specials on selected drinks. Brian's set will kick off at around 7:30 p.m.

5/12 Shanghaiist Happy Hour at Cotton's: Donate a prize, support earthquake relief

The next Shanghaiist Happy Hour at Cotton's on Xinhua Lu falls on the one-year anniversary of the devastating Sichuan earthquake, so we have decided to team with Hands On Chengdu, an organization committed to supporting the long term redevelopment of the areas affected by the earthquake for this Tuesday's gathering. Entry to the Happy Hour is free, but we'll be holding a lucky draw with some great donated prizes — all proceeds will go to Hands On Chengdu. Hands On Chengdu will have an informational booth at the happy hour and will be accepting donations and signing up volunteers on site.

Shanghaiist Happy Hour: May 12

Yep, we had so much fun last time around that we've decided to host it twice a month from now until eternity. Which means, come this May 12, you can once again head over to Cotton's Xinhua Lu location to take advantage of (hopefully) good weather and great drink deals. Don't front like you're not excited!

Yeah yeah, we know. We're sick of the Olympics, too. But who can say no to the Boltman?

A couple updates about tomorrow night's gathering at Sasha's. First, we forgot to mention the wines that will be included in the half-price drink special. They are: Santa Rita 120 Sauvignon Blanc and Wolf Blass Eagle Hawk Shiraz/Cab/Merlot. Second, lots of people have asked1 for more information about the music that will be played at the Happy Hour, so we have included a list of artists featured on the playlist under "Music" below.

You are all invited to join us Thursday night at Sasha's for the first Shanghaiist Happy Hour in a long, long time (nine months, to be exact). We think we have come up with a plan to avoid a similarly long gap between alcohol-related gatherings — the first Thursday of every month, we'll have a Shanghaiist Happy Hour featuring half-price drinks (and perhaps other special and great things) at Sasha's. And, as usual, these "happy hours" will not be limited to one hour (8 pm to midnight is what we're starting with).

In case you have missed -- and really, how could you -- we have been asking daily Aussie trivia questions in a build up to tonight's Shanghaiist Dinkum Drinks Happy Hour at Senses. The winners of these daily contests get a free drink at the party (if they can find us in the crowd).

Only 26 hours to go before you get to drink cheap Coopers beer while wearing your Drizabones and listening to Regurgitator's "Kong Foo Sing." And no, we have no idea what any of that means.

Today's Shanghaiist Dinkum Drinks Happy Hour reminder comes with another chance for you to have Shanghaiist pay for your first drink at the party Friday night.

We're sure you are all marking the days off on your calendar, but just in case, here's a reminder: Three days and less than two hours to the Shanghaiist Dinkum Drinks Happy Hour!

The prize package for best 80s outfit at our Happy Hour this Friday sure is heating up. In addition to a bottle of Solid XS Vodka donated by our host Freelance Bar & Grill, the lucky winner will also get two items kindly donated by the self-described "sexiest menswear store in Shanghai" -- MANifesto. (We will force the winner to take a couple Shanghaiist T-shirts off our hands, as well.)

Did you realize that July 28 is the 20-year anniversary -- to the day -- of July 28, 1986?!? We're glad we noticed it when we did -- because that gave us just enough time to throw together an 80s-themed Shanghaiist Happy Hour at Freelance Bar & Grill (we are cool with the place now) to mark the momentous occasion. Here's all you need to know:

We checked out the third floor of Blue Frog on Tongren Lu last night -- pretty cool. That is where most of the Shanghaiist Happy Hour folks will be. We'll have our own bar up there, and there is a DJ booth where our DJ iPod jockey Jeff Jorve will spin his "tastefully eclectic mix of neo-soul, jazz, funk, and hip hop." We imagine the crowd will spill over to other floors of Blue Frog, which is fine, because everyone in the entire bar gets the drink specials. Not a bad deal.

After dozens of tryouts, we have finally selected the DJ for the Shanghaiist Happy Hour, coming up Friday, March 3 at Blue Frog on Tongren Lu. And the winner is ... "The Weasel" ... aka Shanghaiist's own Jeff Jorve (really, his iPod will be spinning all the tracks). Expect an eclectic mix -- and likely several songs with references to ultimate frisbee. To get a better feel for what Jeff-Jorve-the-DJ will be like, check out our top albums of 2005. Here is Jeff's top 20:

Just think, two weeks from now you will be getting ready for the Happy Hour people[1] are talking about all the way in Honolulu, Hawaii. A reminder of the details:

Even though we only sold two Shanghaiist T-shirts, most people who attended the first Shanghaiist Happy Hour last month at Cotton's -- thanks again, Cotton! -- thought it was a huge success (except maybe for the waitress who got hit in the head with a beer stein and never came back to work ... seriously, is she OK?).
