Shanghai East Asia Hong Kong United 0 – 3 LA Galaxy

The match is part of the Galaxy’s pre-season tour of East Asia and will also serve as a prelude to the start of the new domestic season in China later this month. Pre-season showpiece games aren’t usually noted for being particularly exciting, but then, for a lot of people, this match isn’t really about the football – it’s about catching a glimpse of David Beckham. As reported yesterday however, it’s still unclear whether the former England captain, currently marooned on 99 caps for his country, will be risked for the match given his history of injury problems since moving to LA last year.
Locals cynically call him "papa," or praise him as their "king." Some expats, meanwhile, call him "big head." Whatever the moniker applied to him these days, Tajik President Imomali Rahmon is showing himself to be a man full of surprises.
Shanghai. It is all happening. Here's the proof:
We have already told you that H&M will open in Shanghai on April 12 (in the old Benetton building at 651 Huaihai Zhong Lu), and now we have a little more to add to the story (emphasis on a little). This is the hard-hitting stuff you have come to expect from Shanghaiist — yes, Kylie Minogue is coming to Shanghai (earlier this month it was announced that Kylie is the new face — and body, we assume — of H&M swimwear). Sadly, that's about all the "news" we have to offer. The email from the PR firm handling the launch said she'd be appearing at an event for "special invited guests" on April 11. And that's about it.
We were lucky enough to hear about the concert held by the Espoo Big Band from Espoo, Finland held last night before it happened. Held in a ballroom at the Regal International East Asia hotel, the show was not widely publicized, and most people we talked to at the event had only heard about it a few days beforehand like us. There was still a pretty good turnout, but it’s too bad more people didn’t make it because it was a pretty amazing show.
This sounds like a cool job: go out and search for a Shanghai's soul. That's what this reporter from the Sydney Morning Herald was sent to do. However, in the course of this he makes some observations that we found debatable, or in other cases, flat-out wrong. Here's one part of it:
Shanghaiist first heard of the Korean TV drama Dae Jang Geum (大长今) or Jewel in the Palace from mom, who used to recapitulate every episode on the phone, which, as anyone who really loves watching TV, knows is impossible. Our interest was further piqued when Shanghaiist's Chinese literature professor remarked that he too was glued to the television every night. So, is the target demographic 60-something Asian eggheads? Evidently, Hunan TV doesn't think so, because the folks down in Changsha wouldn't want to follow up their smashing success with Super Voice Girls with a dud.
With forecasts calling for temps reaching 38 degrees -- that's 101 for you Fahrenheit folks ... and damn hot for everyone else -- Shanghai dwellers will be looking for ways to keep cool this coming week. If you don't want to beat the heat in a large air-conditioned shopping mall, it's time to find a good place to swim. But what if your apartment doesn't have a swimming pool?
