From Panthea Lee and Dan Shemie, two very tired organizers of Shanghai's Pangea Day movie marathon that wrapped up not too long ago: So after weeks of plotting, scheming and ceaseless fretting, our Friends of Pangea Day event in Shanghai has gone off without a hitch. For those unfamiliar with the situation, a brief explanation: the Chinese government has launched a serious crackdown on cultural events in the lead-up to the Beijing Olympics. Case in......

Listening to the ever-excellent Football Weekly podcast from Guardian Unlimited the other day, we stumbled across the story of the Tibetan "national" team playing against Padania this week in Milan. If you're thinking "how can Tibet have a national team?" or "what the hell is a Padania?" then you've clearly never heard of the Viva World Cup. Frankly, you probably wouldn't be the only one. The Viva World Cup is a football (or soccer, if......

By Jay Caplan How often can you encourage world peace by kicking back and watching movies? Pangea Day Shanghai is your chance: a 12-hour movie marathon of short and feature length offerings from local filmmakers, culminating with a 4-hour global simulcast of 24 international short films. In 2006 filmmaker Jehane Noujaim won a TED Prize: $100,000, and one wish. Noujaim wanted peace, and believed mutual understanding the key to achieving it. Save for travel, film......

Like celebrity chefs and famous fashion houses, the world of big name DJs always seems oddly male-dominated. The Shelter will be doing their best to redress that gender imbalance tonight however, with an all-female line-up on the decks. From the promoter: "With the local DJ/Club scene constantly growing, there has, up until recently, been very few female DJs in Shanghai. Over the last year or so we have seen a good number of new female......

If it's possible for three generations of Chinese golf to already exist (modern China didn't get its first course until 1984), they will all be proudly on display in the third round of the US$2.3 million BMW Asian Open, a European Tour event, today at Shanghai's Tomson Golf Club in Pudong. Forty-two-year-old Zhang Lianwei, the trailblazer among Chinese pros, shares the lead at 5-under with Robert-Jan Derksen of the Netherlands, one stroke clear of Northern......

As we feel frankly uncomfortable in anything else, Shanghaiist frequently rocks the t-shirt and jeans look. Classic. To that end, eno is one of our favourite shops to head to — with a great range of creative and oh-so-cool clothing, including designs by some of our favourite bands and musicians. So, when they say they're throwing a party we're naturally interested. When they say there'll be live music we get pretty excited. And when they......

Got this from Peter, a possibly drunk Shanghaiist reader in Qingdao: Am I the only one in Shanghai who thinks the EXPO mascot HaiBao looks like Mr. Towelie from South Park? Every time I see a poster in Shanghai I think of Mr Towelie's trademark line "Anybody wanna get high?" What's the verdict, readers? Also on Shanghaiist Shanghai World Expo mascot unveiled! Ack! The Shanghai World Expo mascot is multiplying! We admit it: This photo......

We are currently in a twist figuring how to go to all three events, decision-making has never been harder! If we can split ourselves, yes we would in a heartbeat. Shanghai Climax KaosPilot International will host an exhibition and party centered on "Social Innovation seen through the eyes of the post 80's generation" featuring 90 pieces of art by 120 students from 4 schools. We hear the venue is huge, and did we mention......

Any fan of electronic music in China has heard of Antidote. Headed by DJ Ozone, aka Michael Ohlsson, Antidote is a crew of electronic musicians and DJs based in Shanghai. This Thursday April 17th at The Shelter, they're introducing a new party-as-concept: City Sound Sessions. Michael explains. What is City Sound Sessions? City Sound Sessions is almost a nostalgic look at a vanishing music culture. At our events, the DJs will play music that represents......

It was yet another stellar performance by several up-and-coming local talents Yvette Ling, Monica Zhang, Javen Chen and Yunwu Xia from Live Mic Musical last Saturday at Kathleen's 5. The last time we attended anything Broadway related, we went to Live Mic Musical's debut production of their series of musical cabaret productions. If you missed the first production, you can judge the talent and performance level for yourself with the YouTube clip we've conveniently embedded. Or better yet, you can just come to the next show, which takes place this Saturday night. This time, the show takes place at the well-known bar and......

It might have been one day earlier than planned but, after they rescued the Dandi Wind gig, Shanghaiist checked out the renewed Windows Tembo last night and we liked what we saw. Having made Live Bar the place that it is, we had every faith that Brad Ferguson would turn this slightly more central location into a great place for live music too and, if last night's show is anything to go by, it is......

Updating yesterday's post, the once-canceled Dandi Wind concert in Shanghai is now back on ... but at a different venue. At 12:55 am, the handy SMS hotline the promoters set up (see previous post) told us: Dandi Wind confirmed at Windows Tembo ... Door open at 9PM today. Brad Ferguson to the rescue! The details: Dandi Wind at Windows Tembo TONIGHT, doors open at 9 pm 66 Shaanxi Lu (near Yan'an Lu) 陕西北路66号(近威海路) [map] And......

One of William Shakespeare's most famous plays comes to Shanghai tonight as TNT's production of Hamlet begins its run over at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre on Anfu Lu. Arguably among the most intriguing and complex of the tragedies penned by the Bard, Hamlet explores the themes of revenge, madness (both apparent and real), and, ultimately, death — all in the "rotten" state of Denmark. Featuring some of Shakespeare's most famous and revered moments (the......

DPRK 0-0 ROK; China 0-0 Australia; 26th March, 2008 A large crowd created a fantastic atmosphere at Hongkou Stadium last night but neither team were able to reward the great support with a goal, as North Korea battled to a 0-0 draw with South Korea. A game of few clear cut chances was largely controlled by South Korea, particularly in the first half, as DPRK fielded a defensive side with striker Jong Tae-se playing......

Shanghaiist braved the crappy weather last Saturday to take in the sight of people bashing each other with pillows for no discernible reason. We arrived with hopes of massive pillow-based armies clashing heroically on the battlefield of the Shanghai Sculpture Space. Reality was somewhat less grandiose as maybe 30 - 40 people showed up to fight, with probably another 20 or 30 people cheering from the sidelines (not including some bemused security guards). Also, due......

Ok, we know that China are taking on Australia in a crucial World Cup qualifier this afternoon at 2pm, but that's all the way down in Kunming and, frankly, we're not too optimistic about China's chances in this latest 'Group of Death' match. Therefore, match of the day has to be this evening's fixture at Hongkou Stadium where North Korea will take on South Korea (kick-off is 7pm). For those of you at the back......

High Voltage, Yu Yin Tang Shanghai 21/03/08 Phew. The morning after the night before and Shanghaiist's ears are still a-ringing — and our head still a-throbbing — from High Voltage's gig at Yu Yin Tang (as promised, we also hit Brown Nylon Suit at C's afterwards, which probably didn't help) so we're hoping you'll forgive us if this isn't the most in-depth or analytical gig review. As you've probably already read on these pages,......

By Jake Newby Let there be rock! Alright, it's not the real AC/DC obviously. Shooting to thrill instead will be a Belgian tribute band. Yep, that's a Belgian AC/DC tribute band. Magic. Rock 'n' roll ain't noise pollution and these lads from Belgium are supposed to deliver a pretty high voltage performance that will shake your foundations. They've headlined festivals all over Europe and have even opened for the mighty Status Quo, leaving their audiences......

It's been a while, but this Sunday will see a welcome return for the PAUSE collective, who will be bringing their heady mix of independent art, music, and creative stalls to everyone's favourite ex-Blue Ice hang out, The Shelter. Kicking off at 4pm down on Yong Fu Lu, there will be a bunch of inventive things to get excited about, featuring contributors from across the globe and, of course, the cream of Shanghai's arts scene.......

The Shanghai location for the Worldwide Pillow Fight Day has been announced by the guys from Bad Cat Productions! Now, before we get to this, let's remember the PSB's distaste for public mass gatherings. Observe the rules (see below) and be sensible. Remember the one about bailing after 15 minutes maximum. The time is almost the same as on the official website: 15.03 on Saturday. The official message says to wait for a countdown. And......

Even just a few short years ago, the art district down on Moganshan Lu consisted of a handful of independent and quirkily ramshackle galleries quietly plying their trade. Today, the area has not only been considerably spruced up, but has also grown to include a number of upmarket cafes and shops. This development has inevitably created winners and losers, with numerous galleries falling by the wayside. Now, Island6 — housed in an old flour mill......

Or where we’re going after we’ve seen Hedgehog live that is. As Shanghaiist told you yesterday, one of Beijing’s best bands will be hitting Yu Yin Tang tonight as part of their China tour and they are well worth checking out (not least for a chance to see possibly the world’s smallest drummer, Atom, who also used to be in Hang on the Box). Not only that, but Hedgehog will be supported by one of......

As you’ve no doubt read about already here on Shanghaiist, this weekend could be one of the best for live music since we scuttled into the Year of the Rat. Therefore, you’ll forgive us if we don’t make it down to M on the Bund but instead spend our time over the next couple of days at slightly less refined venues checking out some great bands. Nevertheless, if books not beats are your thing, then......

Just because we’re on the other side of the world from Ireland doesn’t mean that there won’t be plenty going on for St Paddy’s Day over here in Shanghai. This year, March 17th — the date when all of us are a little bit Irish — inconveniently falls on a Monday but fear not, the Emerald Isle’s Shanghai contingent are celebrating early with a bunch of events this weekend. Ireland Week 2008 has been going......

We know he's meant to be quite a bit more brilliant in concert than we saw the other night, but it seems as though a few things conspired to make Harry Connick's Shanghai show this past Sunday less great than it really should have been. For one, the role that the rest of the band played was way too small — it seems that we heard more from Bjork's brass section the week before! And......
