A family of five died from gas poisoning in the Fengxian district of Shanghai last night. They were found dead at approximately 10.30 after neighbours alerted authorities to the smell of gas in the area.

Shanghai to "encourage" 4.4 million people to move from downtown to suburbs
We hope this will ease the squeeze in downtown Shanghai: "More than 4.4 million residents will be encouraged to move to the suburbs in 2020 after the city government pledged to build seven new towns with full public service facilities and more job opportunities, the city's urban planner revealed yesterday." The seven towns planned are Jiading, Songjiang, Lingang (in Pudong), Qingpu, Nanqiao (in Fengxian), Jinshan and Chongming.
Shanghai to invest 40 billion towards becoming a tourism hub
Shanghai has announced plans to invest 400 billion yuan 40 billion yuan into its tourism industry during the next five-year plan. [Correction: we originally reported 400 billion, the correct figure is 40 billion.] While Shanghai Disneyland and Happy Valley's "second phase" construction will suck up most of the money, there are also 11 other projects in the works, including ecological parks and nature resorts, as well as the Fengxian 'Oriental Venice' project.

Uh oh, it looks like us pedestrians aren't the only ones getting stolen from recently, thanks to the current dastardly economic situation. City police have now issued a warning reminding companies that keeping large amounts of cash on their premises may not be a good idea. Shanghai has seen a 35% rise in thefts of local areas since February, compared to the same period last year. The most robbed districts: Qingpu, Pudong, Fengxian, Songjiang and Jiading.
