After opening up to much buzz last May, Avalon seemed to drift a little below expectations. Before the year had ended, the chef was out and the menu and the look was promised a revamp. Now, Sean Jorgensen (formerly of MAYA) has taken the lead - and I was incredibly pleased with the results.
Avalon: Surprising value, amazing ribs
Vote for your favorite restaurants in the Miele Guide food poll
Time sure flies, huh? The fourth edition of the Miele Guide to Asia's best restaurants is now in the voting stage. If you've tried out a whole bunch of food this year, why not give your favorite restaurants a shout out on their voting page? As added benefit for us: apparently us editors get some seats at their FABULOUS MIELE GALA PARTY if you guys click through to vote. So yeah, do it, or something. I could use a free meal.
David Laris' eponymous restaurant as we know it is no more
Shanghaiist received an anonymous tip a few days ago that Laris, brainchild of restauranteur, David Laris, was scheduled to shut down soon but with the breaking news of the catastrophe in Jing'an, we had to put that story on the back burner. Nonetheless, intrigued to hear that such a highly visible venue on the Shanghai food scene might be on the verge of closure, we had to investigate.
Vote for your fav restaurants for the Miele Guide
Public voting has begun for the 2010 Miele Guide, which is basically Zagats, but for Asia. So if you're a dedicated foodie with a lot of opinions and a wallet that can afford to back them up, then you might as well register with them and let your will be known. Last year's guide included three restaurants from Shanghai in the Top 5, all from the Bund. Maybe this time, we'll get a slightly more district-diverse selection to represent our fair city.
Three Bund restaurants place in Miele's Top 5 for China
Well, would you look at that - The Miele Guide, which is like Zagats but with an all over Asia focus, has listed five of the best restaurants in China and three of them are in Shanghai! Who made the cut? Jean-Georges came in at fourth place, beat out just barely by fellow Bund institution M on the Bund at third. Though Beijing's Da Dong Roast Duck took second, it was ultimately David Laris' Laris that grabbed the top spot. Laris is also located on the Bund. While those three are fine restaurants indeed, did the Miele people never go anywhere outside of the Huangpu district?
