We were lucky enough to catch Hedgehog, one of China's finest bands, rocking their short and spiky pop-rock at Yu Yin Tang this Saturday. We hope they come down from Beijing to visit us again soon!

The last few weeks have seen a steady stream of great gigs on the Shanghai live scene, something that is set to continue this weekend. Does this mean that the city needs more gig venues? We're not so sure, but there are a few signs of some more live options coming our way. First, a certain underground rehearsal studio has started putting on the occasional show and will host Torturing Nurse's 5 year anniversary in a few weeks. Second, Soma - the people behind the Indie Top label, which hosts bands such as Momo and The Mushrooms - are reported to be looking at opening a live venue as well. Of course, this is a sign of the increase in recent months in the number of talented local bands capable of putting on a great live show, but we'll wait to see whether such expansion is sustainable.

Bam! Bam! Bam! Nope, that's not the sound of Midi hopes being quashed, it's the sound of three straight weekends of great gigs coming your way. Forget all that tiresome festival nonsense and look forward to Battles this weekend, the brilliant Hard Queen next Saturday and then Hedgehog promoting their new album the weekend after.

For those who weren't able to make it to Yuyintang last Saturday, here's a glimpse of the action. HedgeHog is amazing to watch live, and the crowd went crazy (literally, as in jumping dancing when there was already almost zero sardine-packed standing space).

Shanghaiist just got back from the Hedgehog gig at Yuyintang and what a great show it was. Yuyintang was packed out, with latecomers unable to get into the main room once hedgehog took the stage. The audience seemed tentative at first but into the second number they broke into action and the band ate it up.

Or where we’re going after we’ve seen Hedgehog live that is. As Shanghaiist told you yesterday, one of Beijing’s best bands will be hitting Yu Yin Tang tonight as part of their China tour and they are well worth checking out (not least for a chance to see possibly the world’s smallest drummer, Atom, who also used to be in Hang on the Box). Not only that, but Hedgehog will be supported by one of Shanghai's finest bands, Hardqueen.

For a second straight week Shanghaiist has missed our Friday deadline, oops. The good news is that Saturday is when all the really good stuff happens.

These are definitely the dog days of summer and as in summers past, live shows have dried up with the heat. Ironically enough Shanghaiist has chosen to skip town and head to even hotter Hong Kong where PK-14, Hedge Hog, New Pants and the Re-tros will be playing in the cramped but intimate Fringe Club on Sunday.

Oh, the fun of Friday nights. After putting back a few drinks at the Shanghaiist party or SCAA charity dinner, a night of great music (Beijing bands) lies ahead.
