Edible Celebrity Figurine of the Day: Paul Pierce
A chocolate bobble-head sized figurine of 2008 NBA Finals MVP Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics encased within a Wujing (武警) baijiu presentation box? We'll take it! Oh, it's not for sale, you say? Well, a picture will just have to do. Along with Michael Beasley of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Pierce recently concluded a two-city tour of China that saw him play as part of the Kentucky Bisons of the American Basketball Association (a semi-pro league) against the Beijing Ducks and Australia's Cairns Taipans in Beijing and Shuangyashan (双鸭山), Heilongjiang, respectively.

Photos: Japanese settlers memorial defaced in Heilongjiang
Five avant-garde patriots used a color palate primarily consisting of red to re-contextualize and reconfigure the visual meaning and texture of a memorial to Japanese settlers from World War II. The guerilla art collective set out from Beijing, and managed to avoid security guards with their paintbrushes, two buckets of red paint, and hammers (a simply bravura addition that should be included in every artist's studio), before reaching the memorial sitting in a country park in Heilongjiang province's Fangzheng county (方正县). By slathering red paint over the names of the deceased Japanese settlers carved in stone, the patriot-artists were referencing a dense hodgepodge of post-war art movements, including the great Neo-Dadaist Robert Raushcenberg's seminal work, 'Erased de Kooning Drawing' (1953), chaotic paint-over collaborations between Basquiat and Warhol, Japanese action painting, and even the graffiti culture that sprang from the Hip-Hop ethos of 1980's New York, a form rooted in rebelliousness that eventually turned into a general urban landscape white-noise that spread everywhere.

Visitors to Harbin's International Ice and Snow Festival strip down to their bathing suits and swim in the icy waters, believing this is good for health:
Watch: Two Chinese men set new record for full body ice contact endurance
Two Chinese men stripped off at Zhangjiajie, Hunan, and set a new world record for full body ice contact endurance. Chen Kecai and Jin Songhao, both from Heilongjian province, stayed in the ice for 118 minutes and 120 minutes respectively, breaking the previous record of 115 minutes set several days earlier by Wim Hof, a 51-year-old Dutch man, in Hong Kong. While he was in the glass compartment, Jin wrote two signs -- one proclaiming "Long live the people of China" (中国人名万岁!) and another "Long live the Chinese Communist Party!" (中国共产党万岁!)
Watch: Shattered Dreams 幻灭
Two months ago, in Singapore, the naked body of a 24 year old Chinese woman, Li Hongyan, was found floating in the pool of a bungalow owned by a real estate tycoon located in the posh Sentosa Cove district. The woman had been working in Singapore at an Indian restaurant, but was moonlighting as a karaoke hostess.
Think it's cold in Shanghai? Wait till you watch this!
As someone once said, “Sex is like snow, you never know how many inches you're going to get or how long it will last”. So while our snow ended kinda prematurely yesterday, we can only look on with envy at the many many inches everyone else is getting (we're looking at you, Harbin!). For a start, check out this mass wedding in Harbin that will totally give the Moonies a run for their money! Catch the lone (relatively underdressed) midget without a bride at 0:24 (everybody say awwwwww!)
Families protest mine workers' deaths
As the death toll from a mine explosion this weekend in Heilongjiang rose to 104, relatives of miners killed have begun to protest outside of the mine entrance. Though China's Coal industry has gotten safer (only 1,175 people died in mines in the first half of this year, down nearly twenty percent from last year), the constant reoccurrence of deaths from poor safety conditions is nothing more than a tragic leitmotif.
Early morning coincidences: Train crash and bridge collapse happen at same time
Is 2:34am the witching hour in China? In a bizarre and terrible coincidence for infrastructure, a bridge in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province collapsed at the exact same minute as two passenger trains crashing into each other in the central province of Hunan, if reports are to be believed.

Baby pandas usually get the lion's share of the attention, but did you know China had a serious Siberian tiger breeding program in place as well? A center located to the northwest of Harbin, in Heilongjiang, has been working on churning out tiger cubs since 1986.
