Shanghai man caught on video skinning a golden retriever

Yesterday a Shanghai woman uploaded an appalling video of a man skinning what looks to be a golden retriever in broad daylight on a sidewalk in Hongkou. The video immediately sparked outrage online and offline, and has been reposted thousands of times on Sina. The news video below includes only clips of the original, which was over five minutes long, and thankfully has blurred out the animal. [Warning: graphic images] more ›

Searching through Shanghai's unprotected heritage: Baoshan and Hongkou

Searching through Shanghai's unprotected heritage: Baoshan and Hongkou

Yesterday, Shanghai Daily reported that there were 155 historically significant homes in the city that are currently unprotected. These houses were previously used by Shanghai's most influential politicians, industrial tycoons, scholars and such, but are now in a dilapidated state (though, luckily, not yet torn down). Interestingly, many Chinese newspapers printed out exactly which 155 homes these were, so I thought I'd document them. more ›

    Shanghai Snapshots: Luxun Park chinglish

    Shanghai Snapshots: Luxun Park chinglish

Back in August, we were informed of an initiative to wipe out Chinglish on all the city's signs before Expo time. If this billboard from Luxun Park in Hongkou is any indication though, it seems that project hasn't really been very successful, especially considering its proximity to the very people who are supposed to police these things - student volunteers (the park is located right next to Shanghai International Studies University). more ›

The Factory closing up shop until November?

Well shoot. The Factory, the art/food destination that only just opened in late April and played host to a multitude of interesting art/food events is now "termporarily suspending its activities." According to its recent blog post, they'll be closed until November while they undertake "a strategic review to refocus and further develop its creative core." We'd heard rumors of them having trouble paying chefs, causing some of the founding members to leave - does that have anything to do with this? more ›

For those of you pining for a Minhang-Pudong linkup ...

For those of you pining for a Minhang-Pudong linkup ...

2012 could be your special year. Construction began yesterday on metro Line 12, which will connect Minhang district with northern Pudong, passing through Xuhui, Luwan, Jing'an, Zhabei, Hongkou and Yangpu along the way. Most eye-popping line: "Nineteen stations on Line 12 will connect with 16 other Metro lines." Line 19 (still in planning stage) being one of them. It doesn't seem too long ago that there were only two metro lines and there would be a mad dash for open seats at Shanghai Railway Station, because that is where Line 1 began. It doesn't seem too long ago, because it wasn't. By 2012, Shanghai is supposed to have 13 metro lines covering 500 kilometers. [Shanghai Daily] more ›

American Apparel now open at Shanghai's 1933 Building

SH Mag reports: "The clothes are still made in LA, and so are the wages – staff here receive above the US minimum. ... Small, but packed full of sweatshop-free goodness." And the prices? "Fine jersey T-shirt (¥188); plain tank vest (¥154); knee-high tube socks (¥102); solid rib mod dress (¥307); lamé late night mini skirt (¥328); unisex striped zip hoody (¥461); nylon taffeta jacket (¥553)." We're curious to see how this location performs. Nice looking building, but does anyone actually go there? (Honest question — we've never been.) more ›

    1933: Where's the beef?

The handsome former slaughterhouse building "1933" is an Art Deco landmark in Hong Kou. which we've written about twice before. Apart from the occasional exhibition, its doors remain closed to the public, so we spent Saturday taking a peek around to see how this new "creative space" is taking shape. more ›

Xiahai Temple: Under the sea in Shanghai

Xiahai Temple: Under the sea in Shanghai

So the story goes: When Chairman Mao visited Shanghai he asked, 'I know there is a Shanghai (上海:on the sea), but is there a Xiahai (下海:under the sea)?' We assume that this was followed by uncomfortable forced laughter as none present (save possibly Zhou Enlai) had the heart (read: cojones) to tell him that the joke stunk. more ›

Interview: Master Kai Uwe Pel, Kung Fu expert

Yes, in the old days it was a national centre. The Jing Wu school was fully running before 1920 in Zhabei. Huo Yuan Jia was the most famous, although many people think he’s fictional these days. You can’t compare now to then but you can still find a lot of Bau Gua Zhang, Taiji and Xinyi, for example. more ›

Year in Live Music and what to look forward to in 2008

Year in Live Music and what to look forward to in 2008

Well, 2007 is pretty much over. This Shanghaiist has never really been a big New Year's person, maybe because we always end up the odd one out at midnight or the one that has to break up the drunken fights that erupt. But, in the spirit of the season we have decided to do that traditional (way over done) recap of the past year. 2007 was a big year for music in Shanghai and below are our picks for 2007...and of course this list is biased, memories are subjective to each person and the most memorable shows for me usually tend to be because of personal involvement at some level. more ›

SICIW and more on the <strike>slaughterhouse</strike> abattoir

SICIW and more on the slaughterhouse abattoir

We went to opening night last Thursday and were able to get a sneak peek into the 1933 building mentioned a few posts back, where some of the exhibitions were still being touched up at the last minute. One of the purposes of the SICIW is to bring together art and design entities from all over the world into one place, perhaps fomenting future collaboration and connection. Jay-Z: From Marcy to Hongkou Stadium? We'll see ...

We hear the voices everywhere we go in Shanghai. "Yo, I heard Jay-Z's gonna be in Shanghai" ... "Jay-Z is on October 23rd" ... "Hov will be in Shanghai for a show and maybe even try to open up a 40/40 Club (He's got one in Singapore, he can fly his private jet to the Middle Kingdom easily)." Yes, the rumors of the Jiggaman coming to town are out (we told you about it back in August) ... But is Young Hov REALLY coming to town? more ›
