Photos: Football riot between Shanghai and Hangzhou fans
Outside of Hongkou Football Stadium last night, a good-old fashioned football hooligan fight involving hundreds of Shanghai Shenhua (上海申花) and Hangzhou Greentown (杭州绿城) supporters went down, and had to be dispersed with a massive turn out of police force. Argentinian Luis Salmerón of Shenhua scored a stoppage-time goal to clinch the game 3-2 for the home side, sending the crowd into a frenzy. However, the evening would end with dozens of rival football supporters on both sides receiving injuries and drawing blood.

One of the tightest Championship finishes in the history of world football - that's the situation Shanghai Shenhua find themselves in as the CSL 2009 season enters its closing stages this weekend. Not since 2005, when Gamba Osaka won the J-League by one point ahead of four other teams on the last day of the season, has football seen such a thrilling championship finish.
Rumpus at Hongkou Stadium for "National Derby"

Kanye West: Coming to Shanghai (to retrieve his misplaced shuttershades)
Rumours have been swirling for weeks, and now it’s official: Grammy-winning producer/rapper Kanye West will be passing through Shanghai for a gig at Hongkou Stadium next month. Although we don’t usually take anything seriously until we read about it on Kanye’s blog, we made an exception here after speaking to Steve Sybesma, CEO of China West (who are organizing the show along with Live Nation Asia).
Chinese Football: Shenhua complete fall of the mighty
In previous years it was the most eagerly awaited fixture on the Chinese football calendar. Dalian and Shanghai Shenhua, the two pre-eminent footballing powers in the country, have 10 championship titles and seven runners-up honours between them in the 14-year history of the Chinese professional league. The fact that all the runners up spots, and only two of the ten titles belong to Shenhua, made it all the more poingant in their crushing 3-1 victory over Dalian at Hongkou Stadium on Saturday night.

Video: N. Korean/ S. Korean fans at Hongkou Stadium
It's the best that we have, though we have to admit this video doesn't do justice to the incredible spectacle that was made up of North and South Korean fan contingents at Hongkou Stadium for the two Koreas World Cup qualifier play-off on Wednesday. The action on the stands was just as, if not more, amazing to watch as the action on the field.
Match of the Day: DPRK vs ROK
Ok, we know that China are taking on Australia in a crucial World Cup qualifier this afternoon at 2pm, but that's all the way down in Kunming and, frankly, we're not too optimistic about China's chances in this latest 'Group of Death' match. Therefore, match of the day has to be this evening's fixture at Hongkou Stadium where North Korea will take on South Korea (kick-off is 7pm).
Getting around: Opening Day countdown and Century vs Shiji
Time to top-out your public transport cards, all RMB 999 folks, Opening Day is upon us! The Shanghai metro system will soon be welcoming into the family "three lines and two segments," as the opening as been nicknamed, consisting of new Lines 6/8/9, the 2nd northern extension of Line 1 and the final stretch of the Line 4 loop line. Thanks to "planning with Chinese characteristics" it is still unclear whether the first day of operation will remain on the original 28 of December, or be pushed back to December 29. Whenever it is, on that day Line 6 will begin shuttling Pudong'ers up and down their side of the river, Line 8 will bring civilization to the northern boonies we call Yangpu, Line 9 will make quarantining those rowdy university students out in Songjiang that much easier, Line 1 will become twice as crowded as it already is, and Line 4 will mess with our sense of direction by abandoning the concept of terminal stations.
Linkin Park in Shanghai
On a windy and freakin' cold night (yesterday), Linkin Park finally played their long awaited China show... and Shanghaiist has to admit that the turnout was really impressive. Not a complete sellout, but close... and HongKou stadium can hold more than 28,000 people, which is triple the capacity of the Shanghai Grand Theater. Out of all the big named foreign bands we have seen play in China, this by far had the best attendance. A...

Linkin Park this Sunday at Shanghai's Hongkou Stadium
Seems like the event a lot of people are talking about is the upcoming Linkin Park concert this Sunday. From what we have heard there are still some tickets available (from Emma ticketing) but supposedly the event has sold extremely well. If that's true, it's impressive, considering this show is being held in Hongkou Stadium, a venue three times the size of the Shanghai Grand Stage. We have also heard lots of people knocking the...
