It may be so, at least between 2pm to 8pm on weekdays and 4pm to 8pm on weekends. Located on Hongmei Lu's Laowai Street, Shanghai Brewery has an almost mindbogglingly well-priced happy hour price - their homemade beers are just 28rmb for a big glass (and 20rmb for a smaller one).

Shanghai Flower and Bird Markets: Hong Hang on Hongqiao Lu
Spring is finally here and with it comes the urge to watch greenery grow. What better time than now to check out some of Shanghai's best Bird & Flower markets? We've checked out several around Shanghai that are relatively easy to get to from city center - greenify your life today!
Choo-choo-choose it: The Minoya Freshmart sushi train
I'll admit: this restaurant is mainly worth going to for novelty's sake. There are a multitude of sushi-go-rounds with the same quality for similar (or lower prices), but there's something to be said about getting your discount rolls delivered by a toy shinkansen.
More super gigantic stuff to be built in Hongqiao!
Screw Pudong and its pedestrian-hostile streets and villas full of piles of cash (that's what they keep in there, right?). Could Hongqiao be the future of Shanghai development?? According to reports this week, they're soon to get the world's largest exhibition center AND a really really elaborate transportation hub. Despite the fact that I don't see any giant phallic or appliance-shaped skyscrapers coming any time soon (we like those to be conveniently lined up together for photo ops from the Bund) Shanghai developer Vincent Lo (and the bazillions of dollars being invested) says it's got a shot.

Retail revamp at Hongqiao Airport?
Okay, it may be the case that we don't fly enough, but yesterday at the Hongqiao Airport, we were really surprised to see this Virgin bookstore at the departure hall (that Richard Branson has really acted fast, hasn't he?). Does anyone know how long the store has been there? Food and beverage options appear to have widened up quite a bit too. Element Fresh has been there since last summer, located just outside the exit (sorry, no picture there), serving decent food at the same rates as their outlets elsewhere in town. With the competition, travellers are finally getting food that can actually be eaten, and prices also seem to have come down a bit on the average. In the meanwhile, we think the retail experience at Pudong Airport continues to rot away with its portfolio of Chinglish brand apparel stores and cafés that get away with serving bad coffee for RMB50. What do you frequent flyers out there think?
Orange fog alert and lousy airport/airline services

Chili Cook-off - the sequel
For starters, we have moved the cook-off to the street that runs alongside Bubba's Bar-B-Que (between us and Marriott Hong Qiao). It is a nice, tree-lined street and we're gonna close that sucker down to traffic and allow pedestrians and cooks only. Oh sure, we'll have music, games for kids, and games for adults as well.more ›
Element Fresh coming to Hongqiao Airport in July
We have whined before about the dearth of decent restaurants in Shanghai's airports. Pudong travelers are still better off brown-bagging it, but it seems relief will soon be on the way for domestic travelers: Element Fresh is opening up shop at Hongqiao Airport. From their website:

Shanghai Sexpo: 'And now we will begin exercising'
Shanghaiist decided to have a look at the Annual Adult Care Expo (or "Sexpo" as many call it). Located at the International Exposition center on Xingyi Lu, with a 30 RMB admission fee, the Expo features just about everything related to sex. Much of this was toys -- fancy dildoes and vibrators. As it was last year, there were several exotic toys that take the brain and physical work out of thrusting a piece of plastic into yourself, leaving you to simply lean back and enjoy the ride.
24-hour diner to open in downtown Puxi (and other news)
Great news out of Jarrett Wrisley's restaurant and bar gossip column this week in SH (especially if you live near Tongren Lu like Shanghaiist does):
