We stumbled upon what must be one of Shanghai's cheapest juice bars last night. It's called Super Sonic Bar and it's located in the basement of the Pacific Shopping Center (tai ping yang bai huo or 太平洋百货) on Huaihai Lu, easily accessible from the Huangpi Nan Lu metro stop on Line No. 1. They have lots to choose from — including non juice items like bubble tea — and the most expensive thing on the menu in 15 kuai. We had an OJ for that price in a decent sized cup (see photo) and it was good. You can watch the juices being made, too, so you know they aren't throwing in anything strange. We are regulars at the Huangpi Lu station and we foresee ourselves becoming regulars at Super Sonic, too — not only because summer is upon us, but because we like to buy juice from shops named after J.J. Fad songs.

On our way back from the gym today, we noticed a new big screen (really big screen) TV for advertisements at the Huangpi Nan Lu Metro stop. And yes, we stood there like an idiot and videotaped it with our phone for five minutes. Most of the ads are for the 2010 World Expo, and boy do they make Shanghai seem like a great place to live. Which, of course, it is.
Those of you in the know may have heard that new ticketing machines are making an appearance on the Shanghai Metro system. Yesterday, Shanghaiist passed through the Century Park station and witnessed two new ticket vending machines that include the option to recharge your stored-value card straight from your bank card, unpacked but not yet in use. Awesome. These new machines are being added at selected stations around the city.
We just noticed these today at the Huangpi Nan Lu metro stop. They very well could have already been there for a while, but this was the first day in a few weeks that we needed to recharge our transportation card. The machines are located right next to the two service windows we would normally go to (and today were closed).
We swear we heard the PA system announce yesterday that we were at Jinjiang Park metro stop, when we knew we were at Huangpi Nan Lu (and so did everyone else — lots of confused faces). We assumed the metro just got its sound files mixed up ... but could it have been someone's mobile phone ringtone?

We received an email yesterday from Fabrique telling us about a "re-opening" party on Saturday, and we wondered, How many re-openings can one club handle? But this most recent incarnation looks a little more interesting than previous ones. Zooma, formerly of the old Tang Hui and formerly of the new Tang Hui, is now the GM at Fabrique, which will now be known as 4 Live (same name as the party held at the club not too long ago). Here's the musical line-up for the re-re-re-opening party: Blue Garden, Honeys, Crystal Butterfly and Zooma himself. No invitation is needed for the party and there in no cover charge. Doors open at 8 pm and there's an open bar from 8 to 10 pm. The email we received said going forward 4 Live plans to have live bands before 1 am and "underground electro music" afterward. We tend not to get too excited about such things because the live music scene in Shanghai changes so frequently, but this at least sounds promising. It's a good venue in a non-residential area that is used to music and crowds. And with his connections, Zooma could potentially bring in some solid live acts. Let's keep our fingers crossed -- and hope they start adding their events to our Public Calendar.
Shanghai finishes the summer in style this weekend with a 40-strong DJ performance at Dino Beach under the guise of the Splash! music festival, kicking off at 3 pm this Saturday.
singing, film producing, and comic-book-and-radio-play starring, a day did not go by when we lacked the opportunity to reflect on the greatness of this man, this myth, this, this ... Andy Lau.
Shanghaiist chose an apartment based on the location of the original Megafit gym on Huaihai Lu. Not that the gym was anything spectacular. It was fine. We had a membership there. And we needed to be walking distance from where we worked out -- the last thing we needed was another excuse not to go. It was a three-story gym with nice big windows and if you used an elliptical machine on the third floor you overlooked an old neighborhood with tile roofs and you could see the Jinmao Tower. Now, Megafit has moved to the third floor basement of the building next door, one floor beneath the Huangpi Nan Lu subway station.
Shanghaiist's gym is moving. And since we found out about this rather abruptly -- and there's a decent chance it might be your gym, as well -- we figured we'd spread the word. We go to the Megafit on the corner of Huaihai Zhong Lu and Danshui Lu, not too far from the Huangpi Nan Lu metro stop. Not a bad gym. Spacious and clean (well, save for that rat we saw there a little more than a year ago). Shanghaiist chose Megafit for its windows, a big wall of them overlooking Huaihai. Time goes by faster on the elliptical machine when you can watch one almost-accident after another down on the busy street.
