Male prostitute arrested for spreading AIDS

A male prostitute has now been charged for knowingly spreading the AIDS virus in a highly unusual case, according to Shanghai Daily. Huangpu District prosecutors arrested the prostitute, named Zhang, after he got into a heated argument with a potential John over the price of sex. Zhang had tested positive for AIDS in February, but continued to work as a prostitute because he “didn't think much about the consequences... [he] just wanted excitement.” The rest of the article is a bit of a wash, calling this the first type of this case “this year.” This year? You sure it isn't “ever?”

Hey expat men: Don't take candy from strangers

Dear expat men, we get that Shanghai is filled to the brim with sultry sirens batting their eyelids and flashing their wares, and that it's probably too much to ask you guys to not partake in the debauchery all around you. But, beware; beneath each playful mermaid is a sea monster waiting to feast. Case in point: two Indonesian women who were just detained by police on Wednesday. Their catches - an Australian, a Dutchman and a Frenchman - all fell victim to the same ploy. Vulnerable and drunk (or just horny), these expat men accepted candy - drugged candy - from the ladies at bars around town. These unsuspecting men then took the pair home, only to have all their luggage stolen in the middle of the night. The two ladies were nabbed at their Huangpu hotel and are now under police custody, where they can do rich, lascivious expats no more harm... but don't think there aren't others like them out there! Bungee jumping coming to the Huangpu

Bungee jumping is one of those things where we, perhaps out of some unfounded bias, prefer to stay away from in China. But if you're more of a thrill seeker (and maybe more open minded about the efficacy of safety laws here), you'll soon get your chance to pursue that sport in Shanghai. Two historic cranes in the Xuhui District are being restored to become Shanghai's first bungee jumping site, according to Shanghai Daily. The Beipao Wharf cranes were originally built in the 1960s to help load and unload freight, but have been idle for years. While the rest of the wharf was torn down last year to make way for a riverside green belt, the cranes and a 200-meter track have been preserved.

Like time lapses? We sure have some affection towards them. Perhaps sensing this, Shanghaiist contributor James Creegan recently went to People's Square to encapsulate all the frenetic activity there into a short little video. Check out the details of how it was made here.

Dan Chung of The Guardian, who brought us that beautiful reel of the Longchang Apartments, has a new video documenting visitors on the banks of the Huangpu River.
