This Thursday at 7.30 pm, the Lille National Orchestra will perform at the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center Concert Hall. The show is part of the "Croisements" festival organized by the French Embassy. Formed in 1976, Lille is a very famous orchestra in France and is currently directed and conducted by Jean Claude Casadesus. In August 1997, Casadesus and the orchestra were the first artists to perform in the newly retroceded Hong Kong. And 10 years later, they came back for the French May of Hong Kong, and they will also stop by Beijing (they will perform in the Forbidden City) and Shanghai.

Several months ago, we heard about a Shandong woman named Wang Jing who created a website denouncing her own father as an adulterer (report in Chinese). On Feb. 5, a local court ruled that the website, which contained writings denouncing Wang's father Wang Zhihua and his alleged mistress Li Cuilian, was "insulting" and ordered that Wang Jing take it down. In August, Li had filed a lawsuit against the younger Wang. The "insulting" verdict is, we think, less serious an offense than libel. However, the court did order the website to be taken down and the younger Wang placed under some kind of supervision (and we don't know what that "supervision" entails), unless the younger Wang decides to file an appeal.

In August 2005 we told you about former Growing Pains star Jeremy Miller's frenzy of acting activity here in Shanghai, but after a series of public appearances and tete-a-tetes with us media folks, he disappeared off the radar. We assumed that he was making the movie Milk and Fashion, which was plugged during all his appearances, and which we figured were more or less orchestrated for that purpose, since he normally doesn't appear in public and pose for pictures with kids for the hell of it.

Although the heat and humidity are seemingly unrelenting, it's safe to say that summer is half over. This means that there are only a precious couple months for the city's beloved Mandopop stars to make pit stops at the local outdoor stadiums. JJ Lin and S.H.E. have already come and gone, but fear not, you one or two other Mandopop fans reading this, more superstars are on the way.
